“Thank you, Lord, for bringing Rachel into my life. It was a perfect gift.”
His heart beat rapidly every time he spoke her name, but particularly in this place. Their first date had been right here. The same sun beaming down, the same cedar tree providing protection, and the same soft grass that enabled them to spend many hours enjoying each other formed a unique amphitheater for their love. Time just seemed to stop in this place. It was an oasis from a world that seemed to speed up with each year and showed no sign of slowing. Refocusing his gaze on the picnic lunch, he smiled at how ordered and neat it looked.
“I think I’m finally getting the hand of this,” he snickered mostly in jest, but with just a slight bit of satisfaction at a job well done.
There was something about a picnic meal. It wasn’t as though the food was anything that special. It was usually simple food, but eaten outdoors on a lovely day like this elevated it above the best restaurant meal imaginable. It was a remembrance of a simpler way of life and a reminder that God had created men and women to live in harmony with nature, not against it. When he and Rachel had married they had chosen to do so in a place much like this. They had made promises to God under the canopy of heaven and it had been wonderful.
“Well, time to eat,” he said sitting down and looking at the food on his plate.
His stomach grumbled mildly reminding him he hadn’t eaten yet today. The preparation for the picnic had taken all morning.
“Father, I thank you for this food and your many blessings on this beautiful day that you have made. Amen.”
He nearly flinched as he waited for a sound that would never come again. He looked over at where Rachel had always been and said,
“You would have loved it today, Rachel. I miss you so much.”
