Jesus traveled with a diverse group of individuals. In Luke 8:1 NKJV we are told. “Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him.” These twelve were of course the apostles. Most of them were uneducated. A number of them were local fishermen. They were proud, hard working men. Something they had in common was they were waiting for the Messiah. Someone who would take them away from the rule they were living under. Deep inside their hearts, they must have known Jesus was the one they were waiting for. Jesus appeared and spoke the words, “Come follow me,” immediately they dropped what they were doing and followed Him.

There were others who were close to Jesus such as the seventy-two missionaries who spoke and healed on Jesus’ behalf. Luke 10:1-20. The twelve he chose were his students. They were to go out into the world and make disciples of all nations as it is written in Matthew 28:19-20.

Luke writes in verses 2 and 3 “and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna and many others who provided for Him from their substance.” Jesus broke down walls. It was very unusual for women to travel with men during this time. Some Rabbis did not even allow women to attend their teachings. Jesus allowed women to walk with Him and taught them.

These women followed Jesus out of gratitude and love. Mary Magdalene led a horrible life being possessed by seven demons. We have heard the stories of individuals possessed. They have been thrown into fires, had convulsions, and cut themselves. Her gratitude must have run deep in her heart being freed from this situation.

Joanna because of her husband’s position had a connection with Herod Antipas. Jesus was not one of Herod’s favorites. Joanna was financially comfortable. The love of Jesus and His message was enough for her to leave her safe and comfortable life. She was leaving in order to support Jesus and His disciples. The women’s financial support enabled Jesus and His disciples to focus on spreading the Word about the Kingdom of God. With the knowledge these women picked up from Jesus’ teachings, I’m sure they had a hand in leading others to Jesus.

Mary Magdalene once demon possessed, Joanna leading a comfortable life and others who were ill traveled from Galilee to Jerusalem. Stood at the foot of the cross and watched Jesus die. They prepared spices and perfumes to apply to His body. The actions of these women helped spread the Kingdom of God. They were loyal and generous followers of Jesus.

We all have a job to do in spreading God’s Kingdom. One is no more important than another. Paul perhaps says it best in Galatians 3:28, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” NKJV
