An ion-plasma storm was in the Testament’s way, and it was too big to go around. Jane, as a trained officer, knew the procedures for such an event. She alerted Captain Noble of the storm, and ordered the synthezoid crew into a shielded part of the ship, leaving her alone on the bridge.
It was understandable that during the confusion caused by the storm Jane would forget that there was one synthezoid officer who didn’t work the night shift, Jayde, the first shift operations officer.
Consequently, as the ion-plasma storm hit the Testament, Jayde, who was in her quarters with her husband John, was less protected from the plasma which could affect her computer brain.
Fortunately, the Testament rode out the storm in relative smoothness, but in the McDonald's quarters, a disturbance of a different kind was about to shake the ship. John woke with his alarm when Jayde was supposed to come out of auto-sleep. Rolling towards her, he did what he did most mornings, kissed her. This morning she drew back, asking in a confused voice, “Where am I? Who are you, and why am I on this human bed wearing non-duty clothes?” She gestured at her short nightgown.
John spoke carefully, aware that with her synthezoid strength he was no match for her in a physical fight. "Jayde...” She turned towards him at the mention of her name, to his relief. “You are in our quarters and I’m John, your husband.” Getting out of bed he asked her, “Why don’t you put on your uniform and we’ll see why you seem so confused.”
As she stood she responded, “That seems logical.”
Five minutes later, both of them dressed, they left their quarters. Jayde seemed confused at the faces in the corridor that seemed strange to her. “Where are we, husband?”
John was a bit disappointed that she didn’t use his name, but he continued to lead Jayde to a specialized bay in engineering.
Once there, he directed her to sit down and then, peeling back her scalp, he exposed the diagnostic ports.
It was the work of a second to see that ionic plasma had affected her memory, leaving her confused.
Using his position as chief engineer, he was able to access his wife’s personal log on his terminal. Connecting his terminal to her artificial brain, he downloaded her logs directly to her memory. After removing the transfer cables and closing up her scalp, he looked into her eyes. The confused look was gone, replaced with awareness of her surroundings.
John knew he had to know how ionic plasma got into her system overnight. He contacted Captain Noble and asked, "Was there any ion leakage on the Testament overnight?"
Noble's shocked response, “John! Is Jayde all right?”
“Yes,” was his curt response. "What happened?"
Nobel answered, “Meet me with Jayde in my office immediately.” She then issued the same order to Adams.
In less than ten minutes, McDonald and Jayde understood how close Jayde had come to being destroyed. John started to reprimand the third shift duty officer, until Jayde placed a hand on his arm and spoke quietly. “John, it was an error made during the confusion of the storm."
Turning to face Adams, Jayde said in a quiet voice, "I’m fully restored, and I’ve learned enough about Christianity to say that I forgive you, officer Adams.”
Captain Noble remarked, “Normally I’d be filing disciplinary charges concerning endangering an officer, but if Jayde has forgiven you, Adams, then there’s nothing further to say.”
