Topic: CONFUSED (07/29/21)
A significant milestone during my teenage years was finally being able to drive a motor vehicle. Reaching the appropriate age, sitting through the early morning zero period to take driver’s education, simulations, driver’s training, written tests, and finally the dreaded road test all lead to the ultimate goal of possessing a driver’s license that allowed me to drive anywhere I wanted whenever I wanted. It was a symbol of freedom that truly did provide everything that it promised but with one important caveat that you had to know where you were going. Unlike many of today’s models, the car I first drove, a small Toyota with plenty of get up and go, could not tell me how to get where I needed to go. On more than one occasion I set out with a destination in mind only to become hopelessly confused as one wrong turn then led to another which took me to an area I had never been to before. I always eventually made it to a familiar place, but in some cases the original goal had to be abandoned. There is little more frustrating than to be somewhere, not far from where you need to be, but completely unable to determine how to get there.

The Bible has much to say about being confused and lost. It describes all of us as being in that condition until the light of God’s truth dawned on our souls and lifted us out of the miry pit of despair that we had been in so long that it felt normal until we were brought forth. As happened so often when I was learning to drive as a young man, I thought the right path was close but I had no idea how to get there. I was always sure it was around the next turn only to find myself even more lost than I was before. Often I found the right choice was to backtrack to my original position and then get help to go the right way and this is exactly what God tells us to do in His Holy Word. Repentance is turning from a wrong path and allowing His Spirit to guide us into all truth. While not getting to my destination when driving was disappointing, not getting my soul to its proper destination is a far more catastrophic outcome. The situation is serious and only the Spirit of God provides the perfect directions for us to get to the right destination.

Being lost, frustrated, and confused was a necessary part of the process of learning to drive well. I often realized that I had been to a place many times as a passenger but never taken the time to notice how to get there. We are not passengers in our own lives but the drivers. We must pay attention to where we are going and how to get there. Being lost and frustrated in life is dangerous and can lead to much unnecessary pain. Our Lord has provided His Word and His Spirit to guide us in the way we should go. His truth enables us to follow His divine path and keeps us from becoming frustrated, lost, and confused. I appreciate those times as a young driver being lost because they remind me to be prepared, get good directions, and pay attention to where I am going. Whether in driving or in life in general this is good advice that will make my life more fulfilling and get me where I need to go.

Some very good analogies here and so well expressed. I have one suggestion: your paragraphs are a little long. Those white spaces in between seem to have the effect of making the story easier to read as the eyes jump from place to place. But I like your story very much.

I loved your analogy in this entry. I believe our eternal destination is the most important aspect of life. Your entry read smoothly and I was anxious to continue to complete reading it. Good job! God bless!
