Topic: TRAVEL (07/08/21)
I was introduced to travel at a very young age. My family moved from California to Massachusetts when I was two years old and then reversed the process when I had achieved the age of four. My mother never provided a coherent explanation for the strange sequence of events but it did provide a wealth of stories about driving across nearly the entirety of the United States which included the time my parents each driving a vehicle managed to get separated and ended up in different states looking for one another. I grew up listening to tales of going from one place to another that stoked my mind for doing my own traveling as an adult. While others seemed happy to stay locally, I always dreamed about going to exotic places, learning about new cultures, and soaking in all that the people of this world had to offer.

My first big trip, at the age of twenty-four, was to Israel and Egypt led by my pastors at the time. My only other experience of dealing with a foreign culture was doing mission trips to Mexico. Since I live in California those encounters were not altogether strange. But, from the moment I set foot in Israel, I knew that I was in a place that lived according to a unique set of rules and that I would have to adjust my expectations. Coming down for breakfast at a kosher hotel I looked upon a breakfast array that was unlike anything I had seen at home, crossing the Suez Canal with its distinct method of operating, and sitting in a hotel looking out upon the ancient pyramids in the Sahara desert are all memories that I will not easily lose to time. This trip, like many that followed, broadened how I thought about what it was to be alive and introduced me to places and people that changed me in significant ways.

While travel has always been part of my soul, it has definitely taken on a greater purpose as I have understood Jesus’ call for his people to go into the whole world bringing the truth of the gospel and helping people come into a saving relationship with him. The biblical vision is for heaven to be occupied with people from every ethnic group which will create a wonderful tapestry of color-filled joy. Modern technology has given us the means to reach the ends of the earth in an amazingly short amount of time. When we move from our local area to other different places around the world we both fulfill Jesus’ mandate as well as growing in our ability to be all that God created us to be. The world God created and the amazing variety that he placed on it is a miraculous witness to his incredible artistry. I have been fortunate to travel to many unique places on the earth and look forward to the opportunity to do so many, many times in the future

You have been fortunate to travel to so many places. I hope you looked for opportunities to witness your faith while you were abroad. It is always a joy to touch someone's heart and make a difference. Good article, though. It held my interest.
