Topic: CONSPIRACY (01/21/21)
Technology has created a world where we have never had greater access to information. Whenever I am in a conversation with a friend and a question comes to mind we quickly pose it to the appropriate search engine and an answer nearly immediately pops to the surface. We usually accept the result without too much reticence and move on thankful that we have such answers at our fingertips. But, increasingly, what at first blush seems a gift is quickly showing itself to be a mixed blessing at best. In the past we had a few trusted sources that nearly all agreed upon, but that is no longer the case. We now have a nearly limitless number of sources with little ability to determine their motives or their integrity and as a result our confidence in what we hear or read is increasingly limited.

Much of this is of our own doing. Whether in politics, advertising, or other endeavors, we created an environment where we increasingly have lost trust in what we are told. False promises, over-inflated claims, or outright deceptions have become increasingly common and the sheer flood of information has made us numb to the truth. We now assume that the speaker or writer has an ulterior motive and that truth has been massaged for one advantage or another. We now see conspiracies everywhere and more and more it seems impossible to trust anyone. Leadership requires a degree of trust from those being led and without such trust chaos is nearly inevitable at all levels.

This breach has shown itself in a most glaring manner during the current world-wide pandemic. Any directive from a political entity is assumed to have an ulterior motive no matter the scientific basis for it. When that directive is from a person of a political party different from one’s own then the worst motives are assumed and multiple conspiracies are brought forth as proof. The power of conspiracy is that lack of proof for it is always affirmed as proof that the truth is being hidden by those in power. Once people begin down this path then all attempts to dissuade them are seen as attacks and conflict is inevitable.

Such lack of confidence is particularly troublesome when it creeps into God’s church. Trust in God is foundational to living for Him and those incapable of trusting anything will be unable to live as God desires. The Bible contains all that we require to please God and live for Him in this life. While there are troublesome sections, much of the Bible is clear, revealed truth that we can rely upon. God has provided His church with men and women who are tasked with properly handling the truth and we who sit under their leadership must have confidence in their ability and their integrity. While we must remain wary, we cannot allow ourselves to become unable to receive God’s truth when it is presented to us. There is truth and God has promised that we can know it. He has given us the Spirit of truth and in times like this it is imperative that we take advantage of His presence and His truth.

I believe there is such a thing as healthy skepticism inside church walls. We need to make sure those leaders have accountability. There is a steady stream of said leaders who are either knowingly deceptive for selfish reasons and others who may be unaware that they are teaching false doctrine. Same as politics - blind trust often leads to trouble.
