Who cares?
Sure, the Van de Graaff experiment was fun, where your hair stood up and made you look like a frightened cat. The rest of the lecture though… Oh it bored me to death. The endless droning made me wonder whether this robot had an actual life or if they just materialised every morning in the science lab and then, once the real humans had left the premises, put on a nightie and descended back into monotonous and irrelevant land of Boredomonia.
I mean, I’m sure that small scraps of it might be useful for life but, to be honest, I found the not-so-inconspicuous games of bin ball far more entertaining, and the girl sat two rows back extremely engaging.
I was recently leafing through some old notes in a desperate attempt to help my son with some homework. Unfortunately, the work was on magnetism: I was never attracted to it. Apparently running a current through a wire creates a magnetic field. The field can be strengthened by coiling the wire which, according to Google, is called a Solenoid. It can be made even stronger by winding the wire around an iron core. It seems silly that they take common things like copper wire and an iron nail and sell it for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Then again, these are the people who play with balloons in their lessons “to demonstrate static electricity.”
I could never be bothered with physics. Liquor, ladies, and lacrosse were my life back then. Oh, how life has changed.
Remember that girl from physics I mentioned? Yeah, I dated her… and many more after her. None of them stuck. I was in university when I met Annabel. She was sweet, pretty, and actually laughed at my jokes. Her grandma was some religious nut who kept bringing up Jesus over Christmas Dinner which I hated at the time. Apart from that though, I had everything I wanted in Annabel.
We moved in together and had a lot of fun but that faded over time. We were faced by the troubles of life and our relationship began to take second place. Our dates became few and far between. Our breakfasts were held in silence. Our son had to fight for attention.
A strange distance began to grow between us and she spent a lot of her day away from home, with people I’d never met. I dreaded what she was doing while I was absent so I asked to come along one day. She took me to some Church. I couldn’t believe it: my girlfriend had become one of those religious nuts. I sat awkwardly at the back when something the preacher said caught my attention. My life has never been the same since that day.
Unfortunately, life as a Christian is not exactly easy. All those habits I’d developed during my wilderness years kept coming back with even more aggression – like a hydra becoming more dangerous the more you battle it. “If object A exerts a force on object B, object B will exert an equal and opposite force of the same type on object A.”
I’ll be walking down the street and see some advert in a shop window. I think about Annabel, my wife, but the lust still builds. The weeds wind around my ancles. The boa constrictor loops its coils around my chest, with mad malevolence in its eyes and torturous intent. The magnetic field is much greater if the snake wraps itself around me as a core.
Pastor Simon listened intently to my terrible tale of toils.
“If you’ll excuse my analogy,” he began for he wasn’t the best at Physics either, “Jesus is a stronger core. If we are wound around him, there are endless possibilities of what we may achieve.”
Maybe, Physics is useful after all.
So that’s my life story. I have come a long way since that Physics classroom and that’s why I have decided to be baptised. I know that I’m far from perfect but God can keep us strong and use our weaknesses for his glory. After all, we are wound around Christ who is our “core-nerstone.”
