God breathed on Israel’s dried-up bones – a breath that raised the dead, the breath of life that brought them to their feet.
God breathed on Jesus, his beloved Son – the Spirit that descended and alighted like a dove, anointing him with power.
God breathed at Pentecost – a rushing wind and tongues of fire, his Holy Spirit filling the apostles and opening their mouths to speak about God’s mighty deeds.
God breathed on Saul – his Holy Spirit took the place of all the threats and murder Saul himself had breathed.
God breathes some day on his prophetic witnesses – his breath will enter them, though dead for half a week, and make them live and stand again.
God breathes on us today – his living breath, the Spirit of new birth, the wind still blowing as it chooses through the world.
See: Genesis 1:2, 2:7; Ezekiel 37:5-10; Matthew 3:16-17; Acts 2:2-4, 9:1 and 17; Revelation 11:11; John 3:8.
