And not forgetting our own Milky Way.
These are just ten out of the billions and billions of galaxies in the known Universe. Then there are those ones with more catchy names like the Medusa Merger, the Large Magellanic Cloud, Black Eye, the Small Magellanic Cloud, Cosmos Redshift 7, Messier 94, Malin 1, Maffei 2 and my favorite, IC 3639: because it's color is Violet - the middle name I share with my mother.
"Why are there so many galaxies?" My husband asked one night as we watched a show about the wonderful workings of our Universe. He'd only recently developed an interest in discovering this great deep expanse of space we call home, an interest I've had for as long as I can remember.
I shrugged, as we sat and continued watching the amazing display of vibrant colors and energy, the interplay of great power and beauty that is the cosmos. I was not so sure myself why there had to be such an outstanding number of galaxies and nebulae, constellations and planetary bodies.
For ages, similar questions have plagued man: How did it all start, this great space-scape? How did we get here? Why are we here? What is the purpose of it all?
However, as I think of these, I realize the answers are not as far-fetched as one might think, though they come from a time so far away. The answers can only come through The Source, and from the very beginning of time, when The Beginning of Creation, The Author of Beauty, The All-Powerful declared, "let there be…"
The Most High said let there be light, and then came light: energy and matter of such massive proportions exploded with a bang that can only be described as colossal.
Stars, planets, moons multiplied at His word. Nebulae filled with gas and dust, nurseries for stars, spread through space; and in time, constellations in diverse arrays of colors, filled the heavens. Galaxies were born, with myriads of stars, solar systems spinning around their suns.
Yet, the incredible vastness, the immeasurable depth and length and breadth of the universe can not fully describe the greatness of The Awesome Maker and Master of the Universe.
Of course, there had to be billions and billions of stars and planets, more still forming as space expands. And these heavenly bodies daily resound His Praise, as they have for light years, joining the heavenly hosts in perpetual adoration; all a reflection of His Glory, an expression of His Beauty, in honor of His Majesty.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows and proclaims His handiwork. Psalms 19:1.
