Saw the stones fly
Watched Stephen die
Martyr of love
Jesus above
Coats at his feet
Heard him entreat
Jesus his Lord
Fury outpoured
Stood there unmoved
Looked and approved
Scrupulous quest
To find and arrest
those who believed
Letters received
from the High Priest
Travelled north-east
with power to search
Ravage the church
Light flashed all round
Fell to the ground
Destiny found
out on the road
Vision bestowed
Filling his mind
Making him blind
Jesus’s voice
Improbable choice
A street called Straight
Three days to wait
To pray and to fast
Dwell on his past
Then all was well
Then the scales fell
Now he could see
Now he was free
Escaped from the Jews
Who could not excuse
the New Way he saw
Greater than law
Basket and Saul
Let down the wall
Now he was Paul
Took the good news
to Gentiles and Jews
Keen to embark
with Silas and Mark
Went in an arc
round the Great Sea
Young Timothy
Barnabas too
Churches that grew
Slave girl possessed
Brutal arrest
Jail’s inner cell
Guarded them well
Feet in the stocks
Earthquake and shocks
Loosened the locks
Prisoners freed
God’s mighty deed
Travelling far
Many a scar
Beaten with rods
Taken for gods
Sneered at by Greeks
Philosophers’ cliques
Thorn in the flesh
Starting afresh
Of sinners the worst
Faced hunger and thirst
Bandit and thief
River and reef
Treacherous friends
Went to earth’s ends
Laboured and drudged
Often misjudged
Sleepless and cold
Always consoled
Stoned and half-killed
Mission fulfilled
Worked without rest
Love-inspired quest
God’s power to search
the heart of the church
Place of his birth
Ends of the earth
Jerusalem, Rome
No earthly home
Ship blown off course
Hurricane force
Driven so far
Stuck on a bar
Breaking apart
Never lost heart
Clinging to planks
Still giving thanks
Swimming to land
Fire on the sand
Snake on the hand
Carried the news
Through Syracuse
Reached Rome at last
Stayed there steadfast
Long house arrest
Many a guest
Paul, maker of tents
and momentous events
Filled with God’s light
Fought the good fight
Filled with God’s grace
Ran the great race
Looked death in the face
Martyred by Nero
True Christian hero
