Recently, in light of the extraordinary times in which we are living, the pastor of our church decided to have us do a series of live fifteen-minute presentations over the internet during the week leading up to Easter. These presentations were designed to consist of a devotional presented by a church leader, a worship song by a member of our worship team, and then a closing prayer and encouragement. I was chosen to do the first devotional and it went well, but it was the worship song that really affected people’s lives. Our pastor’s wife is also a member of the worship team and she did a beautiful song that lifted up the name of Jesus and spoke of his power in a time when many are struggling with challenges that can seem overwhelming and by fear that threatens to undermine their faith. What made this time of worship even more amazing was that our pastor’s wife recently lost her mother and has been forced to process her grief while dealing with a series of challenges that have included her husband being quarantined due to a bad cold and being rear-ended by a drunk driver in addition to overseeing a family of four children. Her ability to find God in the midst of her trials came through in force to all who witnessed it through the lens of the internet.

The following day, our youth pastor shared an insightful devotional, but again it was the worship song that deeply affected all who heard it. Their family is also going through a profound spiritual attack upon one of their grown daughters and yet they continue to live faithfully in the midst of crisis and challenge. His youngest daughter sang and was accompanied by the pastor’s daughter on keyboard. They sang beautifully, but it was their declaration of faith in the middle of a deeply scary time that spoke intensely to all who heard them. Their worshipful declaration of faith in Christ demonstrated that being a faithful follower of Jesus who honors God in all situations is not limited by age. They used their god-given gifts to lift up the name of Jesus and bring a fragrance of hope at a time when many are tempted to give way to hopelessness and despair. By the time that they finished their time of worship, no one who listened to their presentation could help but be deeply moved.

Worship in song is one of the foundations of the church of Jesus Christ. It is a means by which we can demonstrate our faith and trust in God no matter the circumstances. Our pastor was inspired by a sequence of events beyond any of our control to provide an opportunity for such a musical demonstration to be sent out over the internet to a wide audience. When we sing unto the Lord in the midst of current trials and tribulation we send out an echo into eternity that reminds all of us who will hear that better times are ahead and that God is always on the throne. Music is a gift of grace and my prayer is that all of us will have ears to hear as we walk through this season of tribulation into a glorious future.
