Topic: ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL (01/23/20)
The memory was still as fresh as the night when it had happened. Looking back, in light of so much more wisdom, it was a unique act of selflessness that would have been impossible to anticipate. The night had begun like so many. He had been a young man looking for a good time and that meant imbibing plenty of alcohol with his friends. The idea of not driving had never occurred to him. He was invincible. He was too young to die. So, he drove drunk and paid the price. Losing control of the vehicle, thankfully avoiding hitting any other vehicles, he ended up in a disabled vehicle by the side of the road.

Calling his parents for help had been the hardest thing he had ever done in his life. The only thing he could imagine that would have been worse was not calling them. He was in deep trouble and they could make things better. What he couldn't have expected was how much better. They had both arrived and he had been ready for the worst. Instead, using only the words necessary, his father had instructed him to go home with his mother. It had taken him a while until it all made sense. His father was taking his place. His father would take the blame for what he had done and he would escape the consequences of his very poor judgment.

At the time he hadn't really appreciated the significance of what his father had done for him. Later, after encountering the living Christ and becoming a follower, he had learned of how his heavenly father had acted so that he would not have to pay the price for his sins. It reminded him so much of what his father had done for him. His father had been far from perfect, but in that moment he had been a perfect reflection of a loving, caring heavenly father. What should have been a disaster had turned out very different.

His father has passed from this life into eternity, but he always has that memory of that night. Every time he celebrates communion, he recalls not only the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for his sins, but also the selfless act of his father in taking his place. He knows that he is a beneficiary. He has received the benefit of the sacrifice of others that has made his life so much better than it could have been. As a result, all is very, very well.

Interesting story. I realize it was eventually a learning point for the son, but he should have been forced to deal with the consequences of his actions.

This is a beautiful story of a father's unconditional love. It has great potential. It would pack more punch if the writer would take it out of passive verbs and make them active. Also in my opinion, if written in the first person. Way more showing and less recounting the incident would grab the reader even more, hold their attention and make the intended lesson more lasting. Thanks for sharing!
