Amazing Girl, growing to a height of five-hundred feet, swept the villains into the water with one flip of her giant hand. Mariness ran toward the water’s edge, intending to dive in and finish dealing with them. Before she could get there, though, the water churned, and the two heroines gaped as a dark skinned woman about their own age, in a teal swimsuit, emerged from the water carrying the Muslims by the scruffs of their necks, depositing them on the sand.
The pair of heroines traded looks of astonishment as the woman started to turn back to the water. “Wait!” shouted Tabitha, and to her surprise the stranger did so.
The Light Force women walked toward the person who had dropped the Muslim women so effortlessly for them to take in. Rebecca asked, tactlessly in Tabitha’s opinion, “Who are you?”
The woman shrugged mahogany shoulders and replied in English that seemed as if she were gargling air. “My name is Lori Lang. And those two,” she waved a hand at the unconscious pair, “interrupted the time I was spending meditating on God’s Word.”
Tabitha shared a knowing glance with Rebecca. Too many services had been missed because of their Light Force duties. Tabitha apologized to Lori. ”That was my fault. I smacked these two…”
Rebecca interrupted her friend, “You just walked out of the water, how…”
Lori turned to face Mariness. “I am a mer-person, and I have to say I didn’t appreciate your friend dumping driftwood into my world,” she scolded.
“Mer-person,“ marveled Tabitha, "but I thought they were just fantasy.”
Lori smiled at Amazing Girl. “Well, until recently, I thought masked heroes were fantasy, too!”
Lori started back toward the water's edge, when she felt a hand come to rest on her shoulder. Turning, she saw Mariness looking at her. “You can always come to church with us.”
Lori shook her head, the water in her curls spraying the beach as she panted, “Thanks, but I can’t. I’ve lost the ability to breathe air for any length of time.”
Rebecca offered Lori a bottle of water, as Tabitha asked, “So not a lot of believers down there?” she queried, indicating the water.
Lori drained the bottle of water, and seeming to breathe easier answered, “No, my family worships two pagan gods, King Curi and Prince Neh-mor, who are supposedly descended from Poseidon. I’m really grateful my human mother raised me in the Truth, before I could no longer live on land.”
Rebecca and Tabitha telepathically shared a thought that Lori sounded like a missionary who really didn’t want the job.
Lori cut into their mental communication by asking, “Any more questions? That bottle helped, but I need to leave the beach.”
Rebecca said, “Just one last question. If you’re a mer-person, where’s your tail?”
Lori laughed, water streaming from her gills. “I did say that I used to breathe air. Got that from my mom. Being half human means I’m going to keep my legs and not have them turn into a tail.”
As Lori raced across the beach to return home, the two heroines called out their farewells. Lori turned, looking a bit blue around the gills, and waved silently.
Just as she disappeared beneath the waves, a pair of sheriff’s deputies arrived to cuff the costumed Muslim women. The deputy on the left stared at the water and remarked, “I overheard what you were talking about. Recruiting her into your Superhero club?”
Rebecca shook her head as Tabitha answered for them both in the negative. “I think we may not ever see her again. But to keep your report simple, I suggest you leave out any references to mermaids.”
The deputy nodded vigorously, and escorted She-Snake and Ali-Gator to her cruiser.
