The cheque bounced. Assume responsibility. It must have been something you did wrong. Wrong numbers, wrong date, wrong name. It had to be you, who else is there? Of course, you did it.
The cat’s sick. You did something. Or you didn’t do something, but it’s your fault fat has filled up all those empty spaces from the hysterectomy and is pushing on her organs and causing her distress. Suffer with her, you deserve it. She doesn’t get enough exercise. She should be on a diet. You’re responsible. Accept it.
A friendship is lost. It’s been years since that unhappy parting of the ways. But you have to admit that it was your fault that the relationship didn’t work. You should have tried harder. You’re the stronger one. It was your responsibility to help the weaker half of the partnership. It was your job to be tolerant and forgiving. You messed up.
The church failed. You did it. Poor leadership, or no leadership at all. You weren’t adequate for the task. You didn’t visit enough, pray enough or work hard enough. You are supposed to be building the Kingdom, not tearing it apart. Your name will go down in history as the “terminator of churches”. Do the honourable thing, the responsible thing. Quit.
The country’s in turmoil. Did you vote? Then it must have been for the wrong person. You never were any good at making wise choices, were you? Oh, you didn’t vote? That explains it. The blame falls on your shoulders for not being a voice for right, for justice, for God.
The world is a mess. You must have done that too. You didn’t live right. You could have done more, said more. On the other hand, perhaps you said too much, or said it badly. What you did was not well done. Assume your responsibility. You know it’s your fault.
Does it feel like a crushing load? That’s only because it is, and only because you deserve it to be. After all, it’s all your fault. It’s time to accept responsibility. Embrace the consequences of your crimes against the world.
Be responsible. That’s how it started.
And this is how it finished: “He took our infirmities and carried our sorrows … he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4, 5 NIV).
God, through Christ, made Himself responsible. You can let go now.
