Vexation tended to be her first course.
Today she had to elbow lunchboxes and crumbs out of the way just to put a bag of carrots and peas onto the counter. A box of crackers was still open on the counter and she ended up knocking it over.
Two minutes later her son Peter moseyed into the room. “Mom, can you download this app for me?” He shoved the iPad under her one free hand. “Please.”
“Can’t you see I’m busy right now? Maybe later. Couldn’t you help by rinsing some dishes?”
“Sure, Mom, just as soon as I finish something.” His voice drifted off down the hallway.
Why can’t he just do it now?
In order to clear some space, Miriam opened the lunchboxes left on the counter. The first one contained half a sandwich left over from yesterday. She pondered how demanding it could be to actually finish a lunch. Wasting food was her number one pet peeve!
“Mom, can you help me with my homework?” Janette waltzed into the kitchen singing a tune and waving a notebook. “I don’t understand the math assignment I have to turn in tomorrow.”
“Maybe. What do you have to do?”
“I have to solve these quadratic equations.”
“Uh, I don’t know. I haven’t studied that in years. Maybe we can look at it after dinner.”
“What are we having for dinner?”
“Chicken pot pie and kale.”
“Yuck! You know I don’t like kale.”
“Oh, the exasperation of the fastidious!”
“What are you talking about, Mom? You sound like my English teacher.”
“Never mind. Just go do your chores, please.”
“Ok.” Janette grabbed a few crackers and whistled her way out of the room.
“Mooommeeeeeee….” the long drown out word caused her stomach to curdle. Why couldn’t he just say it in a normal tone?
“What do you want?” she barked.
A curly-headed boy jumped into the room. “Mommy, what’s tank-ulness?”
The question caught her off guard. “I…do you mean thankfulness?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Where did you hear that word?”
“Miss Sarah said to be thank-ul all the time.”
"Well, it's kind of like saying thanks."
He grabbed his Mom’s hand and bobbed it up and down. “Hey, we say that now!”
“We do?”
“Yeah, when we eat.”
“You’re right, sweetie, we sure do. But I think Miss Sarah was thinking about the Bible verse about being thankful all the time. That’s what God wants us to do.”
“Even when I play?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, Mommy, I go play now.”
Miriam drifted back to the disheveled kitchen. What’s there to be thankful for here?
Her eyes gazed from the food filling the counter to the water running from the faucet. Her ears caught the sound of laughter from the living room. Her nose detected the smell of lilacs floating through the window.
Maybe there is something to appreciate.
One thing was certain...she would be thankful for the lack of mess after they all moved out!
