Topic: COFFEE BREAK / TEA BREAK (03/01/18)
Soft, early morning daylight begins to send its rays cascading over the nearby trees and through the window glass onto the table where Carlos sits looking at the coffee in his cup as he twirls the creamer thoroughly and its black contents transform into a rich brown. This is his way of dealing; learning to accept harsh realities.

"It's so nice to have someone to talk to. I am alone so much these days. What did you say your name was again?"

Carlos looks up into the face he knows so well. Its every line and crease brings back memories of much happier times. His life has been far from perfect, but it has been good and he has this woman to thank for that.

"I'm Carlos."

He stares deep into her eyes as he searches for some sign of recognition; some indication that she remembers.

"That's a wonderful name. You are such a dear for taking time out of your day for an old woman."

"It's my pleasure."

His heart beats quickly within as a smile appears on her face. She doesn't smile much these days. The cares of life and her increased confusion has stolen so much of the joy that had marked her life. He drinks his coffee down quickly. He wants to linger, but he has responsibilities. There is never enough time for the things that really matter.

"Well, I have to be getting to work."

He slides out of the booth and stands to his feet. That is the signal for a petite young woman to walk over and join them.

"Ready to go, Juanita?"

Awareness slowly works its way to the surface. She looks at the woman and allows her to help her into a wheelchair. Carlos nods at the woman and smiles. She nods back before taking the woman away. He watches as they move into the parking lot and a small tear appears on his face.

"Good-bye, Mom. Have a great day."

My mother had dementia; one of the hardest things in my life was sitting with her while she slowly lost her memory of her entire family.

This scene packs a lot of emotion in a short amount of space. Brought tears to my eyes too.

Good topical piece. I could feel the emotion and picture scene. I liked the way you showed how he took time to be with his mom but showed the difficulty he experienced while doing so.

I did have to read the first sentence a couple of times. Maybe you could shorten it or break it up into more than one.

I enjoyed reading this and it kept my interest. Moving piece.
