James walked by this park every day, wishing they would ask him to join them. Shrimp they called him. “Hey Shrimp, what are you staring at?” If only once, just once, they would let him play. They would see. He would surprise them all. He could do everything they did and more. Today wasn’t the day though, he was late. His grandfather had been difficult this morning. It seemed to be happening more lately, and he wondered again how much longer he would be able to care for him. His teacher had told him if he was tardy for homeroom one more time he would have detention for the rest of the school year. What would grandpa do without him in the afternoon? Today he had to book it straight to school and not let anything slow him down. As he drew closer he could hear them talking, but something was wrong. He couldn’t hear the ball bouncing. What were they doing? “Hey Shrimp, you wanna play with us? We’re a man down.”
Joe stood across the street, telling himself he would not go in. He’d promised his wife and she was trusting him. How many times had she forgiven him his broken promises? As he watched, a man walked up to the door and went inside. Just as casual as can be, as though he had no idea he was walking into a trap. He seemed to have no inner struggle, he simply opened the door and stepped inside. ‘If I go in there, I can’t go home tonight.’ He turned to walk away, and just then the door opened. Out stepped Mannie. “Hey Joe, I haven’t seen you in a while, come on in. I’ve got real good odds on tonight’s game, it’s good to see you buddy.” The bookie was always happy to see him.
Flashing red was the warning; Only 2 spaces left. Such a big decision, a life changing decision. Her friends thought she was crazy. Maybe she was, but this was something she’d always dreamed of. It would cost her everything, but how many people on earth could claim to have stepped on the moon? Suddenly the screen changed. Only 1 space left. Her finger shook as it hovered over the ‘Book Now’ button…
