Erica saw them coming and bolted inside to take cover before their ominous presence arrived. She looked out the window and shuddered.
Her older sister, Selah, looked up from the book she was reading. “What’s up?” she asked.
A low rumble of thunder answered before Erica could.
“It’s a storm!” Selah jumped up from her comfy place on the couch and ran to the window, excitement bursting across her face.
“How can you be so excited,” Erica moaned. “Storms are mean and scary and not fun and they make bad things happen.”
Selah looked at her with a strange glint in her eyes. “How would you like to see a different side to storms?”
Erica’s interest was piqued. That question, coming from anyone else, wouldn’t have much of a draw. Selah, however, wasn’t anyone else. “Are you going to use magic again?”
Selah nodded and held out her hand.
Fear and excitement, reluctance and anticipation, fought for dominance within the younger girl. Finally, she looked up, her face resolute even as the lingering uncertainty shown through her eyes. “Let’s do it!”
Erica took hold of her sister’s outstretched hand and watched as Selah tinkered with the pendant she always wore around her neck.
“Magic pendant, glow and glow and take us where we want to go.”
With those words, the star-shaped charm began to sparkle. Then light burst out and swirled around them, wrapping them in a soft, protective rainbow. It lifted them off their feet and through the window, directly toward the towering thunderheads. But it didn’t stop there. It went beyond the storm to the other side where it set them gently on the ground.
“Where are we?” Erica asked.
“To really understand storms, you need to know what is happening before you actually see them. So, we have gone back in time to the moment right before the storm was made. Here, put on these glasses. They will help you see things that we usually can’t see.”
Erica took the glasses and put them on. “Wow!”
The normally clear air was filled with tiny red dots. They swarmed upward but were stopped by a thick brown layer of something. Above the barrier, tiny blue dots were moving just as frantically, desperately trying to get below the brown layer.
“What’s happening?” she asked.
“Well, the red dots are warm air. They are trying to go up, like they usually do, but there is a layer of dry air that isn’t letting them. The blue dots are trying to go down, but they can’t. You see, when God created the world, He made it so that everything works in an orderly way, but sometimes there are problems.”
“Like that dry air getting in the way?”
“Exactly. When that happens, creation does what it needs to do so that it can return to a peaceful state. In order to get there, however, it has to make things… not so peaceful. Watch.”
The blue dots came together in one mass and thrust upward against the barrier. This time, they made a tiny hole. It was enough. The red dots and the blue dots forced their way through the opening, ramming into each other and creating a massive amount of energy that built its way ever higher into the sky. Within the cloud, Erica could see what looked like a beautiful and powerful dance of various colored dots.
“It’s beautiful!” she exclaimed.
“Do you recognize it?” Selah asked.
“Is that really the storm?”
Selah nodded. “Nothing but a powerful display of energy, simply trying to make things right again. Come on, it’s time to go to the other side.”
The necklace sparkled and they were off. This time they landed right outside their door. The storm was over, the air clear and fresh with the scent of the earth permeating the atmosphere.
“It did it! The storm did it! It made things right again!” Erica spun around with outstretched arms. But then she stopped. “It’s still scary with all its power and loud noises.”
“Yes,” Selah agreed, “Things that powerful can be as scary as they are beautiful, but remember, even the worst part of the storm doesn’t last forever. And, do you know who is even more powerful than the storm?”
Erica thought for a moment. “The One who made it?”
“Exactly.”

It was an interesting way of telling the science part.
