New to the city I started my search by asking around for recommendations. Some of the people I asked were locals while others were foreigners, like me. I even took the metro downtown and scouted out the large shopping malls where I heard good cakes could be found. Finally, my African colleague told me (an American) about her Malaysian friend who bakes cakes. I decided to check it out. The following conversation is how I found my cake. All the texts are copied exactly as they were written.

Kelly: Hi nice to meet u
Kelly: What cake r u looking for?
Me: Hi. It is my 40th birthday soon. I don’t like local style.
Too spongy and too much cream.
Kelly: Wow happy 40th birthday
Me: I have a six and four year old at home. Cake is essential for celebrating birthdays. (Smile sticker)
Kelly: But is it ok if I bring your cake before the weekend? As I might go somewhere (for the holiday weekend)
Kelly: (Referring to a photo) This is the cake I made, butter and chocolate cake
Me: Let me think about it.
Kelly: Ok
Me: Charity said that yours are good!
Kelly: She loves my cake (Blush)
Me: (Introducing myself)
Kelly: Glad to meet u (Smile)
Me: So, when are you thinking about if it is before the weekend. My husband is away Thurs – Sat.
Kelly: I can pass to charity if u want
Me: (More introductions including Charity)
Me: I won’t celebrate before Saturday.
Kelly: The cake is good to put in freezer
Me: Really? How long does it take to thaw?
Me: I saw that you do something with Oreo.
Kelly: The day before the celebration just put in the fridge then it is good to use
Kelly: Yes chocolate Oreo
Me: (Smile) Where are you located?
(Kelly and I talk about her home location – no shop. Then talk about details for picking up by metro.)
Kelly: O ok hehe
Kelly: What cake do u want? Chocolate Oreo?
Me: Passing to Charity is complicated and cake would sit all day at school.
Kelly: O ok
Me: Either that or I was going to go with Chocolate Banana from (name of a shop).
Me: But homemade sounds better to me.
Kelly: I reduce my sugar level a lot, what is your preference?
Me: Anything that would be good and yummy for little ones. (Smile)
Kelly: Ok (Ok sticker)
Me: Where are you from?
Kelly: Malaysia
Me: Ok.
Kelly: So about what time would you reach (metro station)?
Kelly: Coz I need 30 minutes to reach that metro from my house (Blush)
Me: Let me talk to our driver.
Me: How much for the cake?
Kelly: What size?
Kelly: Just simple decoration will do?
Me: What size do you have? What kinda decoration can you do?
Kelly: You can check my moment (on the messaging app we use) on the cake I did before
Me: (Checking the moments) I love cheesecake too but that will have to be for another time.
Kelly: Ok
Me: I did. I like the flower decorations on the unicorn.
Kelly: (Joyful)
Me: Sorry. Distracted looking through your Moments. (Smile)
Kelly: It is ok
Me: (Talking about my children and the cakes they would like) I also like red velvet with cream cheese frosting. So many choices.
(Continue talking about cake and picking up details using pictures
as references.)
Me: Thank you. The cake was delicious and we all enjoyed it! (Picture of my son who fell asleep at dinner in front of the uneaten cake.)
Kelly: I saw. Really great you all love it. Your children is so beautiful (Joyful, Joyful)
Me: Thank you!
And that is how you order a Chocolate Oreo cake with roses (no
unicorns) over a messaging app for your 40th birthday.
