"It's over," Jennifer read the harsh words out loud one more time.
Jennifer's boyfriend, the reference seemed so juvenile considering what the two of them had experienced together, had ended their relationship so quickly and with such cruel finality. She had not been prepared. She had never seen it coming. Though, looking back, there had been signs, there must have been signs, but somehow she had managed to miss them all.
"How could I have missed every sign?" How could I have been so blind?"
Jennifer placed the key in the ignition and the engine of her 2006 Honda Civic roared slowly to life; as much as such a machine was capable of roaring. The purchase had been prudent, one approved of by her parents, and now it had morphed into her ticket away from them, away from everything that she knew, and into a new and hopefully better life. What would that life be? Who would she be? She had absolutely no idea. All that she did know was that she had to be away from Jason and the meaning of those last words from her phone. Jason's last words to her had spoken volumes and they were all that she needed to know that her current life was empty and worthless. Jason wanted nothing to do with her and so she put the car in gear and quickly sped away.
"Who could that be?"
Victoria Song rose tiredly from deep thought as she slowly realized that someone was pushing the front doorbell. She shuffled toward the door and opened it to reveal Jennifer's former boyfriend Jason; the reason that her daughter had felt compelled to leave what had always been a life of contentment.
"Hello, Jason," Victoria said woodenly. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm looking for Jennifer."
"Why? Wasn't breaking her heart once enough for you?"
"I don't understand."
"You told her that you two were over. It pushed her over the edge and now she's gone. She wouldn't tell me where she was going. She just wanted to leave all of the pain and hurt behind."
"No!"
Jason put his hands on his head in obvious dismay.
"I was driving as I was sending her that message. I know it was stupid, boy how I know, but I was in such a hurry to get to her. I wanted to tell her that I was finally done for the day and we would be able to spend some time together. I only had time for those two words when the car in front of me stopped suddenly and I had to turn the steering wheel quickly to avoid an accident. I lost control as I went off the road. I got pretty banged up and ended up in the hospital. I just got out."
Victoria stared at Jason with a combination of deep sorrow and utter amazement.
"I'm so sorry. Jennifer was convinced that you had dismissed her and wanted nothing to do with her. She left and was determined to never look back."
Jason dropped his head, turned, and walked away.
"One message," Jason muttered. "One moment and everything changed."
