We met at our cove for practice and had already started when Mo arrived. He brought new music. That’s not a cool thing when it’s biggest gig of your life. The band was angry.
I voiced reason, “Mo, it’s too late for that. We need to be tops.”
Mo was insistent. We all took copy of his chicken-scratched notes and played a short segment together. The tune was not bad, but the words, were, well terrible!
Tell the man, who I am
Tell them at the stores, there is more.
Tell them at the bars, it’s not in the stars.
Tell your mom, who provides the calm.
Tell the maître d who is the real king.
Tell the waitress, who will bless.
Tell your father, sister, brother,
There’s a friend, like no other.
This pained us like the unexpected slam of a toe in the dark!
“What’s the point?’ asked the drummer.
“Keep going,” he commanded.
We acquiesced, only because Mo was our star and we could never draw a crowd without him.
Tell your neighbors there is more.
Tell your enemy who will set them free.
Tell your son of what He’s done.
Tell your daughter of the living water.
“I need a smoke.” The lead guitarist walked out.
“Mo, man. The gig’s in a couple days.” I pleaded.
“We will add this.” Mo stood ground.
“It’s a downer. I won’t do it.” the bass player mumbled.
“It’s the most important message we can send our fans.”
Uh oh, here he goes. Ever since he became a Bible beater he kept tame. Though, I knew this day would come. I was a believer too, but I didn’t advertise and definitely did not force my ideas on others. Mo, was there.
Tell the news, because it’s good.
Tell the news, too precious to lose.
Tell the news, as you should.
Tell the world who the answer is,
He is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!
The drummer threw his sticks, “No way.” He left.
Mo yelled out, “Jesus will change your life.”
My life hadn’t changed much when compared to Mo’s.
We’d tease Mo, “No Mo drinking. No Mo smoking, No Mo ladies. No Mo swearing. No Mo fighting. Harassment didn’t bother him.
Mo’s attitude had changed but not his style of music. And as long he kept putting out hits our way we didn’t mind his changes, until now.
The band was outside puffing weed and threatening to leave. This night was going down. We knew we’d be washed out if we played this crap at a head-banger rave.
With a crazy idea, I went out and convinced the band we could turn this around. If we played the song last, no one would know what we were singing about and by that time of night everyone would be so wasted they wouldn’t care. Just to be sure we would blast the amps to drown out the last lines.
We regrouped and practiced. Later in bed Mo’s song that I lambasted haunted me.
The big night arrived. It was wild as usual. When it was time for the last song I signaled to pump up the amps to tear the roof off the place.
We played as heads are bobbing, bodies are banging and drinks are sloshing all over the floor. In a freak turn of events the amp signal was interrupted and there’s absolute complete silence. It was surreal how the crowd froze.
Nothing is heard except Mo’s voice belting out, “IT’S JESUS!”
Instead of blocking that line it was clear as a bell. Instantaneously the amps came back.
Amazingly, the house does not fall, the crowd does not riot. We actually played an encore!
I had been so worried about what that message would do to our bands popularity. I don’t know what those thousands of people did with Mo’s message but it cut to my heart and Jesus changed me. I could not hide my belief any longer.
I started a new band, toured for 10 years then wrote a book about my Jesus and Me adventures. And that began the ‘Jesus and Me’ movement aka JAM Adventures. And here we are, by the grace of God, who accepted a stubborn rock-head and turned him around.
“Any other questions before we close in prayer?”
