My vacation is over, twas sunny and warm. The beach just great.
Hold dinner; I won’t be home late.
Busy thumbs through the mail;
Passing the palm tree card, as he rushes to the next task.
Climbing a ladder that no one ever asked.
Leisure rides the train;
Admiring the hills and fields of grass.
Yet, home sweet home is her desire, alas.
Busy cleans their entire abode;
Not a thing out of place, all spic and span.
Pot on the stove, a roast in the oven as planned.
Leisure sinks in the seat;
Comfortably dozing to the lull of the tracks,
Grasping the gift of hope. She dreams of going back.
Busy has numerous errands;
Three or four more will bring him up to par.
Texts, calls, meetings, one stop at a bar.
Leisure steps off the train;
Stretching, yawning, breathing in the fresh air,
Then heads for home with a tinge of despair.
Busy chugs his drink;
Clock says six, two more texts, no more meetings.
One more stop, though it may make him late for her greeting.
Leisure swings open the door;
Anticipating a big home-coming welcome, to no avail.
Busy’s car door bangs the light pole, who cares.
Leisure searches the house;
It’s Sterile and empty. She plops her luggage on the floor.
Busy bumps and pushes through multiple shoppers at the corner store.
Leisure wipes a tear;
Nothing’s changed. She sighs in disgust and despair.
Busy speeds home, just in time for imminent warfare.
Busy’s greeted by darkness;
She’s nowhere in sight, dinner’s aroma permeates the air.
Taking note of the mess, he proceeds to stomp up the stairs.
Accusations fly back and forth;
You Task master; You do-nothing!
You toiler; You idler!
You’re a workaholic: You’re unmotivated!
You’re high-strung; You’re lethargic!
You zealot; You daydreamer!
Busy clenches his fists;
Pummeling his bag at Leisure, its contents topple out.
She dodges then grabs it, pausing before the next bout.
Leisure stares at a book;
Shoulders shrink as she smiles through tears of unbelief.
Quickly unwraps the gift she brought. It’s time for retreat.
Leisure places her gift in her husband’s hands;
Reading the titles simultaneously,
“Common Daily Bible Devotions for the Couples with Nothing In Common.”
They laugh and hug and lean on each other, as it should be.
And that’s how it should be.
