“Grandma!” five-year-old Anna said at the top of her voice beckoning from the doorway. “Come with me. There is something sticking out of the dirt.”
Helen wiped her wet hands in her apron and went to the little girl.
“Look!” Anna said standing on tip-toe so she could see the seed trays and the small green shoots pushing through the soil. She read the label, “B-E-E-T-S. Beets.”
“Very good!” Helen said and hugged her young grandchild.
“Grandma when you were my age was your greenhouse as big as this one?”
“I didn't have a greenhouse when I was your age. It was built when I was a little older. We grew some of our vegetables in the ground outside, but we bought most of our food at the grocery store.
“What’s a grocery store again?”
Helen laughed and picked up the little girl and they sat on the sofa together. “Grocery stores were big buildings where people used to buy their food.”
Anna’s older brother Marcus came into the room. “Marcus, grandma didn't have a greenhouse when she was a kid like us.”
“I know, grandma’s parents built this house, with the greenhouse attached and a bunker for when the bombs came,” Marcus said and sat next to his sister and grandmother.
“Grandma, how come your house wasn't damaged when the bombs came?” Anna said.
“This house was safe because it was in the country. Most of the bombs hit the cities. Great-grandpa knew we needed to remain indoors to survive and we stayed in the bunker for many months. We had enough food and water stored and after that we were able to move above ground. After the fallout there was very little sunlight and the temperature plunged. Any animals or vegetation left outside died. Then there was the famine and violence…"
Her eyes started to burn with tears and she hoped the children wouldn't notice.
She cleared her throat. “Our world changed, and life as we had known it would never be the same.”
“Why did the war start?” Marcus said.
“For many reasons, Sweetie, but people had moved away from God’s laws and our world wasn't a good place anymore.
“Didn't people know that God provides everything for us?” Marcus said.
“But who did they think gave them the seeds?” Who did they think made the sun shine in the sky?” Anna said and she raised her hand and pointed upward.
“They didn’t think the world was created by anyone, and a lot of people were complacent and took nature for granted. Before the Terrible War, I could go outside and sit under the big oak tree that used to be in this yard.
“One day I hope the forests will grow back and the world will be healthy again,” Anna said looking out the window of the greenhouse. “I wish I could go outside like you did.”
“It has been thirty years since the war. The ozone is much better and the world is getting warmer. One day soon we will be outside and we will feel the fresh air on our faces and the sun on our skin. It will be like the way God intended and we will be happy and one with the earth. “ Helen said as she took her grandchildren in her arms and held them tight.
