noticed that her skin color was not within the spectrum of human
skin. Since humans accepted her as she was, she didn't think of
changing her hue. In fact, the Chief Engineer on the ship she
was assigned to said it made her look exotically beautiful. Thus
commenced her personal relationship with an organic being.
She scanned the lab's computer where she had been built, and
located the file of the artist who had fashioned her appearance.
She had been created to look like a fictional Martian character
from his youth. Like human's skin hers reacted with natural
light, where a human's skin darkened, hers seemed to lose the
jade green she was created with. Her skin had lightened to a
pale green.
When the radiation storm caused her skin to burn off and she'd
been asked about changing her looks, she refused to change to a
human color. In truth, when she said to the bionics chief she
wanted to restore her original looks, she had hoped he would use
improved color techniques to restore her original red hair and
deep green skin that wouldn't fade. Also she hoped that
McDonald would like her original color. She was not disappointed
in either case. When she had rebooted in the bionics lab,
McDonald had been there and greeted her with a hearty, "Welcome
back, gorgeous!" and kissed her deep green lips.
Furthermore, McDonald asked her to join him at the
Officer's Mess at eighteen-oh-five hours, after she got off
duty. She arrived to see him seated at a white covered
table with dishes on warming plates. He had chosen to use
silver and china. Jayde asked, "Why are we using such
fancy place settings?"
In his deep bass he responded, "You'll see." Then he removed
the cover off the first warming plate to reveal Qlag Oysters.
She had learned enough about emotions to hide her amusement; Qlag
Oysters were renowned as an aphrodisiac.
She enjoyed the rest of the meal: petite filets with roasted
potatoes and green beans. Had McDonald chosen these items
because she had a preference for such fare? At the end of
the meal he uncovered a final item, Rimborian chocolate
cake. It had the light texture of the human confection
angel cake. About halfway through her rather large portion
her teeth bit down on something hard, round and metallic.
Removing it from her mouth before her jaws could pulverize
the metal for absorbtion, she looked at it and saw McDonald
down on a knee beside her. He took and wiped the ring,
extending it toward her. With a hopeful look, he said
softly, "Jayde, you are the perfect woman I've dreamed
about. Will you marry me?"
In an instant, Jayde accessed her memory on romance customs,
and realized that the food and ring meant only one thing.
He was serious about marrying her. She smiled, held out her
ring finger, and breathed as quietly, "Yes, John, I will."
The next morning, she had a comm message from John informing
her that they had an appointment with the Chaplain. Running
late from a lift delay, she overheard her betrothed through
the door to the Chaplain's office. "What do you mean you
won't do it?" he thundered at Chaplain Brewer.
'What was McDonald yelling about?' she wondered. Then the
doors opened and Jayde saw both men on their feet glaring at each
other.
"I cannot perform a marriage between a machine and a man."
Brewer protested, slightly less soft-spoken than usual.
"Listen to me," McDonald responded through clenched teeth,
"I love this woman and intend to make her my wife. Would
you rather we cohabitate?"
Brewer faced the larger man and said, "It is not
Scriptural. In the Bible it says 'A man shall leave his
father and mother and cleave to his wife and they shall
become one flesh.' Note 'flesh'." He pointed at Jayde.
"Something you can never have!"
Were she human, she'd have experienced indignation. Prejudice
persisted, despite legal rulings giving them the same rights as
organics. She calmly stated, "We don't need this Neanderthal
to marry us. Unless I am mistaken, the captain can perform the
ceremony."
Brewer looked insulted and conceded, "Fine, I'll do it against
my better judgment. Don't need the Captain coming down on me."
And a ten-day later, Jayde floated in to the chapel dressed in
white, marrying John in a short ceremony, which Brewer delivered
through gritted teeth.
