‘Mum! Are you awake?’
‘Yes darling, I am.’
‘Mum, are we really free? Are we really starting a new life with Grandpa and Grandma.â€
‘Yes we are. Grandpa and Grandma are very excited about us coming too. You will love living near them. Remember the stories I told you about when I was little. You are going to have a great time. We will be living not very far from your cousins and it will be fun to see them a lot more.’
‘Mum, are we really safe now? Can daddy come and find us and hurt us?’
‘If he does the police will charge him and he will go to jail, and that would hurt his business. I don’t think he will try.’
‘Mum, my friends at school said they wished my daddy was their daddy and that he is lots of fun. They wouldn’t believe me when I told them now cruel and nasty he is.’
“Julie, one day you will understand how some men, even successful business men like your daddy can be so nice to everyone else but mean and nasty inside their homes. A lot of people have been praying for us, praying that the judge would believe our story and let us move across the water to make a fresh start.’
‘I’m so excited! Can I get a puppy of my very own now we are not with daddy?’
‘Julie, that is enough questions for now. Try and go to sleep as we have to get up very early in the morning.’
Julie hugged her velveteen rabbit closer. Bunny was her best friend, he didn’t mind getting squished and cried on when she was sad. He didn’t mind hiding in the dark wardrobe with her when daddy was very mean. Once he ran away with Julie when things were bad and they hid in the bushes in the park until it was dark and she heard mummy calling her name.
For a whole year Julie had waited for this day, a day when she would be free at last from the past. A past that had been punctuated by violent outbursts from her dad and tears from her mum. Dad was always more violent after spending time at the pub. Mum said he had a drinking problem. When he was really bad, mum would get the car keys and they would go for a drive and only return home when mum was sure that dad would be sleeping his anger off. Once they spent a whole night in a motel, daddy had been very scary that night.
.
Julie’s dreams took the shape of a new life as she slowly drifted off to the world of dreams, assisted by the gentle rocking of the ship. She dreamed of all the fun things she hoped she would do in her new life.
A very loud voice interrupted her happy dreams.
‘It is 4.45am and our ship will be docking at Port Melbourne in 15 minutes. Once the ship has been secured we will start calling people to go to their cars. The first cars called will be for Deck 5.’
‘That’s our deck Julie, quickly hop up and get dressed, we have arrived.’
‘Yippee!’ Julie jumped out of bed, grabbed Bunny and danced around the cabin.’ She had never felt this happy in all her short life.
As mum drove the car off the ship, Julie turned to her and said. ‘ Mum I am so excited, this is our new life and I can’t wait to get to Grandpa and Grandma’s.’
‘It is a fresh start for us both,’ said mum. ‘We have a couple of hours to drive first, but how about breakfast at Maccas?’
‘Yes please mum!’
Julie had so much to look forward to. A new house; a new school; new friends; but best of all a life without fear. ‘Thankyou God for answer my prayer.’ She whispered.
