Adam had told her that if she but touched the tree she would die. One day, when she was alone, she dared come close. She was drawn, she couldn’t say why. Adam didn’t understand her curiosity. He said, “Just stay away from it Eve, we have everything else to enjoy.” But she saw the beauty of the tree and needed to get closer. She was, however, very careful not to touch it. She didn’t know what “die” meant, but she imagined it must not be pleasant. As she walked under it’s canopy a breeze caught the branches and one of them softly brushed her cheek. Fear rose up as she waited for something terrible to happen. When nothing did, she boldly reached out and touched the trunk of the tree.
Now, in the warmth of the sun she could smell the sweetness of its fruit. Beautiful to look at, she imagined the flavor on her tongue and juice dripping down her chin. Why would something so wonderful not be available for her delight? She couldn’t help herself, she had been dreaming of it for so long, she reached out and held the fruit. It rested in her hand. . . until she plucked it from the tree.
Now it is mine and I can do with it what I want.
She took a bite.
Adam approached and she handed the fruit to him. “Nothing happened,” she told him and he ate of it.
Suddenly, she felt unfamiliar emotions. She felt anger, had their Maker been lying to them? She felt doubt, could they even trust Him? And she wondered, is this what it feels like to “die”?
