On her own for the past twelve months, with her savings depleted, work was her only option if she was to survive. She was lucky to have a job at all. Those over fifty who never been in the workforce found it difficult to get work.
‘Good morning! My name is Jill, I am ringing you on behalf of Vision Australia.’
‘Good morning to you Jill,’ a male voice replied.
‘I am not asking for a donation or trying to sell you a product.’ No beeps, Jill felt encouraged and continued with a little more confidence. ‘As you know Vision Australia provide guide dogs to the visually impaired. The training of these dogs is very expensive but they give freedom and companionship to their owners.’ Still no beeps, perhaps this would be her first successful call for the day. ‘All I am asking is that you agree to take a book of raffle tickets to sell to your friends and neighbors.’ ‘Whew!’ She thought, ‘I made it to the end.’
The male voice on the other end answered her. ‘If I agree, could you guarantee me that one of those tickets will be the winning ticket?’
‘No sir! it is just the luck of the draw, but as they say, you have to be in it to win it.’
‘Jill, let me ask you a question? Life has a definite outcome, at the end of your life you will die, you have no choice in the matter. Have you ever considered what will happen after you die?’
‘No I haven’t, but I am only in my mid 50’s so have many more years left before I die.’
‘Jill, people are dying every day younger than you because of accidents and illness. The one who gave you your first breath, will also give you your last breath.’
‘I don’t understand you, who would that be?’
‘God, the creator of the universe. Let me ask you another question. It is now only five weeks till Christmas, do you know why Christmas is celebrated around the world?’
‘I think it has been celebrated for hundreds of years, it is a time for family, feasting and gift giving. For the children there is also the magic of Santa.’
‘Jill, over 2000 years ago, God sent His son Jesus to earth as a baby, it is His birth we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus as an adult went around showing people the way to God. At Easter we celebrate the time when Jesus was put to death on a cross by the Romans. On the third day He rose to life, defeating death. It is because of Jesus death and resurrection that we can be assured of a place in Heaven when we die.’
‘How can I be sure that I will go to Heaven when I die?
‘If you have a personal relationship with Jesus and God the father, you will have his promise. Now to get back to your reason for the phone call. I would be only too happy to take three books and sell those tickets for you.’
Jill took his name and address and thanked him for allowing her to complete her phone call.
‘Jill before you hang up, let me ask you to do something for me. When you leave work today I would like you to go to the nearest church charity shop and ask for a Bible, it will cost you a few dollars at the most. One in everyday English would be easier to understand. Go home and look up the contents page and find the section titled John. I would like you to read the whole of John. If you are touched by what you read, I suggest you go along to a church this Sunday, and after the service ask someone how you can come into relationship with God.’
‘Thank you sir, I will.’
‘I will be praying for you Jill.’
Jill felt a warm glow radiate through her, she straightened her shoulders. She could hardly wait till her lunch break.
