Just one week away from the 31st of October. It’s Halloween for many, but my son’s birthday to me. My ‘baby’ will be eighteen years old. We’ll also be dressing our grandsons for our church’s fall festival and preparing for ‘trunks for treats’. Never my favorite time of year, because as a Christian, I’m torn about what Halloween truly is, but in the same way, I’m all for beating the devil at his own game. The fact that we have hundreds of potentially lost people coming to our turf where we can love on them and possibly have an opportunity to talk about my Jesus somehow makes it okay for me.
This time of year also marks the official beginning of what we lovingly refer to as the ‘holidays’. I have some friends who literally put up their Christmas tree right after Halloween. I think my husband would kill me if I did this. I’m more of a first or second week of December type of ‘tree-putter-upper’. I absolutely love fall decorations though. I love the leaves changing and pumpkins. I love the smell of cinnamon and cider. I love the little scarecrows and mums everywhere. The Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas seem to serve as grand finales to our calendar year. Sometimes they are glorious and full of joy, and sometimes they are bitter-sweet. Either way, I look forward to these days, with the heart of a child.
The rest of the year for me has become a blur. I suppose this is the case for many like me who are growing a bit older. As children, it seems like ions between Christmases. Now it feels like we blink and the season has come upon us again. The rest of the year is a conglomeration of appointments and schedules, birthdays and anniversaries. Deadlines and projects fill our days at work and then school meetings and family gatherings are squeezed into our evenings and weekends. It can become overwhelming, I must confess. Even our Sundays have become so full that we fall in danger of missing the point of the day being ‘set aside’ for worship and rest.
I know we are supposed to live this life to the fullest; eat drink and be merry. This is God’s gift to all of us who know Him. But we also must remember that God isn’t on our calendar. He has plans for us that don’t include a deadline, time limit or even a clock. He simply asks that we remain still, open our hearts and minds to what He is saying, and be obedient to His call. I know the trials of life can make this very difficult. I find myself watching the clock, or wishing the week away, in the desperate hope that ‘this too shall pass’. We just need to remember that He’s got this. He has it taken care of, before we ask. We just have to wait, pray, love, obey, and simply believe. We serve an awesome God, and His timing is always perfect.
