“Could I borrow your candles? You know, the big ones that smell good?”
She loaned him some candles.
A week later, “Could I borrow your romantic records? I need at least two or three.”
She loaned him some records.
Why would he need candles and romantic records? In her mind, she kept returning to one scenario.
Then came the question, “Could you come over for dinner next Friday evening? I’ll cook us something wonderful.”
A significant pattern was emerging. What should she do?
In her eight years of being single since her divorce, she had grown into a mature, self-confident young woman. And she had a soapbox she climbed on whenever a couple moved too fast toward that second marriage. In her innermost being she felt a two-year wait was the minimum amount of time to remove the past garbage and become whole again.
A glance at the calendar brought a chuckle. Friday evening was Halloween. How romantic could that be?
Lois dressed with care, borrowing her oldest daughter’s slinky dress with spaghetti straps. She knew she would have to wipe the smile off her face before she entered his apartment. Just the thought of all those knocks on the door brought forth another giggle.
Poor Nick.
He was instantly flustered when he opened the door and saw her attire.
“You misunderstood. I am cooking here. We aren’t going out.”
“Oh, I know. I just felt like dressing up.” She managed to say all that with a straight face.
He encountered a great deal of difficulty when trying to light the candles. They kept going out.
“Here, let me help you.” Lois pulled the wicks up out of the melted wax. Soon they were dining by candlelight.
After dinner, he placed two glasses of wine on the coffee table and motioned for her to be seated on the couch. Soon the sounds of crooning filled the air. As Nick sat down, the record began to repeat the phrase over and over. It was stuck. Nick stood up, walked to the record player and gave the needle a little shove.
All was well again. He sat back down.
With one arm around Lois, the other holding the wine glass, he began to propose a toast. It was interrupted by a knock on the door. Lois used all the control she could muster when he looked at her and asked, “Who in the world could that be?”
The sweet little voices saying, “Trick or treat” caused a knee jerk reaction in Nick. With a panicked look on his face, he turned to Lois and asked, “Is this Halloween?”
She could hold it in no longer. Lois threw back her head and laughed with gusto.
“Yes, it’s Halloween.”
