She had joined a dating website and was meeting Brendan at the Vue de Monde in Collins Street, Melbourne. She read that it was a fine dining restaurant with views of the city at night and was very expensive. Her new dress, by a well known designer, was bought especially for the occasion, it had cost her more than a week’s salary. Her long auburn curls bounced on her shoulders as she walked towards to restaurant. Her face had just a hint of makeup accentuating her almond shaped, Audrey Hepburn eyes. She was tall and carried herself confidently.
She was to meet Brendan in the lobby. The minute she laid eyes on him she was in love. Tall, dark and handsome, every girls dream. From the cut of his clothes she could see that he was not short of money. Leading her into the restaurant he guided her to a table for two that he had booked earlier.
And then… he started to talk, and talk, and talk, barely pausing to take a breath. He was full of himself.
He told her about all the shares he had, his home on the waterfront, recently valued at over 3 million dollars. His search for just the right antiques, genuine of course, nothing was too expensive. As CEO of a multi-national company he had a seven figure income. He drove a Porsche. He holidayed overseas most years skiing in Switzerland and sun-baking in the Caribbean.
He only paused for breath when the waiter took their order and then continued.
This time it was what he wanted in a wife, a wife would be an asset to his business he told her. He needed the right wife to partner him to the many social functions he went to and share his beautiful home. He had definite ideas about what he wanted, he made this very clear.
He wanted a woman that was tall, slim and beautiful that would look good on his arm at parties… Check, she passed the test here.
It was important to him that she was always well dressed, with good taste in clothes… It was worth spending the extra money on the outfit she was wearing. She had a feeling that he liked what he saw.
The food arrived and between mouthfuls he barely paused for breath as he continued. She found it hard to get a word in edgewise.
Did she want children?... She wasn’t sure how to answer that one. He volunteered that he wanted to travel a lot and that children would be a hindrance…. She agreed with him, but the doubts started to creep into her mind.
What was she letting herself in for if she continued with this date and possible relationship? He never mentioned the word love. He seemed more interested in status and how a wife would add to his already inflated ego.
As she listened to his voice droning on, and on, her head became clear. What a jerk this guy was? She would rather be single. After the first course, she excused herself to go to the ladies room.
She whispered, ‘Dear God, I am not that desperate. I now know it is better to be single with the hope that I will meet the right person in the future, than to make a mistake and regret it forever.’ She slipped out by the door used for deliveries.
The next day her mother rang. ‘How did the date go last night?’ she asked.
‘It fizzed out by the end of first course, he was such a jerk. He never stopped talking, but droned on and on till I could take no more and made my escape.’ Daria answered and for the first time in years was content with her single state.
Brendan went home trying to figure out how much longer he could afford to rent the mansion he was living in. The Porsche had been hired overnight to confirm the of his wealth. He couldn’t work out why his date disappeared.
He never considered for a moment that it was his habit of talking too much that had turned her off.
