One day Tessa and I were bored after we finished our lunch sandwiches. There was plenty of time before the break was over. She suggested that we take a walk down the school lane to the street and back again through the main entrance. It wouldn’t take more than ten minutes.
So we went. All would have been well if the vice-principal hadn’t seen us out on the street. We started running.
We discussed what to say when we were called to report to the principal what we were doing out of bounds. We made up a story that didn’t make sense. Neither the principal nor the vice-principal believed us.
Later I went back wanting to tell the truth.
"We were bored and just wanted to take a walk."
No one accepted that story either.
The principal wrote my mother a letter,
“I can never trust your daughter again after today. We caught her lying after she had been outside the school compound without permission.”
My mother’s answer was, “How can you say that you never can trust my daughter again after this single incident? Or have you found her to be dishonest several times?”
The principal called me to her office. I trembled going there. What did she still have on her mind?
“I’m sorry I was so rash in my estimation of you and Tessa that day.”
A couple of years later when I was in the hospital after an operation, she came to visit me, bringing a bunch of her precious violets. Violets did not grow naturally in the tropics. She grew them on the coolest side of her back porch in pots. Her apology was far greater than her rash conclusion of my dishonesty.
Mother's teaching had laid a biblical foundation for my life.
