In these last days people are living as if there were no tomorrow, but one tomorrow will come when it will be the Day of the Lord. His soon return will be to a world that, like Israel in the days leading to the Exile, is forsaking God. Each day is spent in toil or pleasure, whatever their hands find to do.
Some reading Ecclesiastes 9:10 may think that would give licence for every pleasure.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”
The wisdom of Solomon, the presumed author of Ecclesiastes, shows many instances of action and the consequences of such, some good and some bad, which the world would do well to examine.
Unfortunately, the general world of today has lost sight of the Word of God which should be the source of their daily lives.
Ecclesiastes completes the story of his search for meaning by saying, “Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing whether good or evil.”
Our Lord is perfectly capable of bringing us into line with His plan and purpose for us, but that would mean that we should be attentive to what He has to say to us. We are not clockwork mice to be wound up and sent to where He wants us to be. He wants us to examine His precepts and then to follow through.
I wonder how I would have reacted if I had been one of the five thousand plus people who had followed Jesus to a solitary place after the death of John the Baptist. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. Then, with five loaves of bread and two fish he fed them to complete adequacy leaving an excess of twelve basketsful of pieces to feed the poor and those who had not been present. Having seen and participated in such a miracle I would have committed my life fully to Him.
Today we need to realise this is the same God we are called to fear if we want to be wise. Psalm 14:1 tells us, “The fool says in his heart there is no God...” and Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
Wisdom, then, begins with such a fear, or heartfelt respect that obedient commitment should follow and thus a readiness for the Day of the Lord. This is the journey I take. Who but a fool would not?
