“Well, I don’t have any money in the stock market or anywhere else as far as that goes so I’m not the least bit concerned.” She spooned sugar into her coffee.
“Your kids are almost ready for college too. How can you be so blasé about the whole thing?”
“There’s nothing I can do about it. If it happens, it happens. We’ll just have to figure out then how to deal with it. Worrying won’t help.”
“Maybe not, but it makes me feel better.” I laughed and took a sip of my coffee.
“So worry then if it helps you. I prefer to simply trust the Lord. He said ‘he feeds the birds who don’t even work’. I know He loves me more than a bird.”
“There you go, quoting Scripture. Is that your answer for everything? You’re one of my closest friends, but sometimes you get on my nerves with all the God stuff.”
“Sorry, but that’s my heart. You know, the Bible speaks to every problem or situation we face. I wish you’d come to church with me, Ally. Pastor explains things better than I can.”
“Yeah, yeah. Hypothetical… If, heaven forbid, the police showed up at your door and told you Steve had been in a terrible accident, and you needed to get to the hospital immediately, would you still be so nonchalant and quoting the Bible?” I threw out the challenge.
“Not nonchalant, I can assure you. But trusting God, I certainly hope so. I pray that never happens, of course.”
“What verse would you toss out then?”
“Well, since I have never been in that situation, I can only guess. One that comes to mind right now is ‘Fear not. I am with you always.’ That’s a rough version. I’d have to look it up to give it to you word for word.”
“That’s fine and dandy, but wouldn’t you want your husband with you, not some invisible being? That’s assuming He even exists, of course.”
“I’ll ignore that last statement for the moment. Of course, I would want my husband with me. I’d also be thankful that God is ALWAYS with me. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. Sometimes I need to feel His presence more than others. That would be one of those times.”
“Hmm. Usually I try to ignore your comments, but for some reason they’re resonating with me today. If anything happened to Roy, I know I would be crumpled up in a soggy heap, and probably cursing this God of yours.”
“You’d curse a God you aren’t sure exists?”
I laughed. “You’ve got me there.”
“Ally, would you consider doing a Bible study with me? Maybe we could find answers to some of your questions.”
“I don’t know. What would that look like?”
“We’d read passages, talk about them, just play it by ear.”
“We’ll see. I was just thinking about when Lacey broke her arm. You were as cool as a cucumber. I know I sure wasn’t like that when Kacie came in all bloody after her bike accident. I started to call 911, but she wouldn’t let me.”
“I remember. Blood has that affect, doesn’t it? You know the Bible has a lot to say about blood. That’s one of the things we could study.”
“Blood? Yuk.”
“You might be surprised. “Right now, I have to run. I have a birthday cake to make and decorate, and I promised to fix Lacey her favorite meal too.”
“That would be?”
“Chicken fingers, mac ‘n cheese, and carrot sticks. Nothing too complicated.”
“Sounds good. Why don’t you just run by Kentucky Fried? Then you’d only have to cut up some carrots and do the cake. Course you could pick one of those up too.”
“No. Birthday dinners are special at our house. That’s one thing I DO obsess about.”
“Get moving then. That’s a lot of kitchen duty you’re looking at.”
“See you, Ally. I’ll give you a call later.”
“Okay. Happy Cooking. Tell Lacey happy birthday for me.”
