Fairuz also assumed a confident stance, and glanced at her watch. She must not arrive too close to Eszter. She knew many people would be present tonight. Caution was especially important.
Javed and Arman kicked at pebbles as they emerged from a nearby barley field. Their casual stance belied their eager anticipation. This promised to be a special meeting. The leader of another house church was expected. They had heard of Yakov. They were impressed with his courage in coming to them. They knew some people went to jail, and some were tortured and killed for following Jesus.
At last, their guest arrived. “I bring greetings,” he began. “You are not alone. Hundreds and hundreds of small groups like yours meet every day in our country. People are deciding to follow the Jesus way. Many first hear of Him in dreams. Then they look for someone who can explain their dream.” Heads were nodding in agreement. “I met a man once who had the Jesus book, and he showed me an exciting verse. ‘…your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions,’ (Joel 2:28b NIV). God is greater than the Ayatollahs.”
“Hallelujah! How did you hear about Jesus?”
“I met a man from China. He was selling silk in the bazaar. This man was different. I did not know why, but I noticed that he was always smiling. He did not seem to worry about anything. He spoke kindly to everyone. One day I approached him, and asked him why he was so happy. He invited me to a meeting that night. That was the first time I heard about Jesus.”
“What did he tell you? Tell us. We really want to hear.”
“He told me there is a God who lives up in the sky, and He made us all. He wants everyone to love him, and walk with him. However, He is perfect, and the first people He made rebelled. He had to send them away from the beautiful place He had made. Nevertheless, He still loved them, so He made a way for them to walk with him again.
I did not understand it at first, but he said that only someone perfect could pay the penalty for our rebellion. No one perfect existed on earth, so God sent His own Son, Jesus, from the sky to die for us. I did not know why He would do that, but the man said it is because He loves us. It is difficult to understand, but I feel it in here,” he said as he tapped his chest. Heads nodded in understanding.
“God told us all about Himself in a book, but I don’t have a copy. They are very hard to obtain, and they are illegal. You will probably be killed if you are caught with one.”
“Where can we get such a book?” Javed inquired. “I want to know more even if I die for it.”
“I don’t know. Sometimes the Jesus followers from China are able to smuggle these books into our country, but it is very dangerous. I am praying that I will be able to get one. I have heard that the words of the book are put on a small piece of plastic you can place in your phone or tablet, or computer, if you have one,” Yakov explained.
“A piece of plastic!” they all exclaimed at once.
“Yes. I think they call it a chip. There is also a special watch, I’ve been told. It looks like a regular watch. If you push the right buttons, it puts God’s words right in front of you.” They looked at each other in amazement. How could it be? They had never heard of such things.
Javan raised his hands and loudly praised God. Then he began to sing. The others joined in as they worshipped.
Before they took turns departing, one by one, they joined hands and prayed. “Thank you for sending Yakov to explain more about Jesus. Thank you for sending your Son to die for us. And God, help us to get one of these books.”
