“Please cut the deck,” requested Mass. “The first two personality traits we’ll deal out are leadership and submission.”
Figure, who sat on his right side, cut the deck.
“Now, deal three hands of five-card-stud,” Mass said to Volume who sat on the other side of the table. To Mass, Figure, and himself, Volume dealt five cards, all face up.
The three pair of eyes darted over each hand; Mass declared, “King high wins.”
“Ok,” Figure opined, “so be it. Then, according to our guidelines, whoever wins a hand awards one of the pre-selected traits to the male we created, and the opposite trait goes to the female. With this first hand, leadership goes to the man and submission to the female.
“Good,” Mass responded and programmed the traits into the still lifeless forms of a man and a woman.
With a break in the action, Volume wiped the dampness off the table from the billowing clouds milling about them.
“Remember when we finished creating the heavens and the earth?” interjected Figure lifting his arms so Volume could wipe underneath.
“How excited we were to create this man and woman?”
“You bet,” Mass agreed.
“Nevertheless,” Figure continued. “I think it was a neat idea that before Mass breathed the breath of life into them we planted into their beings different personality traits. As a result, instead of responding in similar ways, they now react in conflicting characteristics.
It’s a good challenge for the two to learn how to work their differences out. It should increase their commitment to one another”
“Best get back to programming,” Mass reminded them.
As one game of five-card-stud followed another, general characteristics became personality traits in the created beings. Men extroverted, women introverted; men’s personalities somewhat crude, women emotional; men have a work mentality, women tend toward being caretakers.
Finally, with a wink and a grin, the last characteristic the three entities programmed into their creations was the natural attraction the two sexes had for one another.
“This will be interesting to watch,” Volume concluded.
"Now," Mass responded,"I can breathe the breath of life into them."
In the beginning the traits were distinct and not confusing. Overall, the men and women accepted each other as they were. Then, too, marriages lasted longer and were less confrontational because individual personality traits complemented each other, and couples recognized this.
Even though Mass, Figure, and Volume didn’t interfere in their lives, the creation looked at their surroundings, each other, and they sensed a power they didn’t understand. They knew something bigger than they existed.
The creation wanted to know more but didn’t know how.
Nevertheless, overall, the way their creation responded to each other pleased Mass, Figure, and Volume, it was good.
Unfortunately, though, after centuries of marriage and child bearing, personality traits began to merge together. As a result, couples didn’t perceive their partner’s personality traits as complimenting their own, and it caused strains in relationships.
Furthermore, the creation began to find fault with where they lived.
They believed their surrounding were too hot, or too cold. They believed the extremes of the seasons were changing, and it would eventually destroy them.
Love and patience became a relatively unknown quantity. Wars raged, and rumors of wars ran rampant
Both agitated and concerned, Mass, Figure, and Volume debated the best way to handle the confusion of creation.
“I’m in the mood to watch it rain,” commented Volume, “about 40 days and nights should do. They can’t learn to swim any younger.
“No, that’s not the answer,” Mass retorted.
“What do you think we should do?” Figure asked.
“You willing to pack your bags for 33 years and make an extended pastoral call?” asked Mass.
“You want me to go down there? Does that mean the five-card-stud program didn’t work?”
“No, as far as we went it worked.” Mass replied. “But we have one more hand to play.”
“Its grace isn’t it?”
“Yes,” Mass replied.
“I’ll be there to minister to you, whatever you need,” Volume offered.
