She had promised Brett, after gambling away their life savings, that she would never enter a casino again. They had been planning an overseas cruise to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary when she lost the lot.
Her weekly attendance at Gamblers Anonymous had been successful in helping her keep her promise. Brett had attended a support group to better learn how he could help Sandra with her addiction.She had been successful and prided herself on her success.
Until today....
She had ten dollars in her purse and promised herself she would leave as soon as the ten dollars was spent. But... six hours later, with many winnings and even more losses, she was still there. Time became irrelevant, the only thing that mattered was that her numbers all lined up.
Eventually was she was out of money, she had even maxed out her credit card, she had no more to play with. Reluctantly, but still in a trance, she got up from the stool and wandered slowly out through the main door. The chilly, frosty, winter air blasted her wide awake.
A year ago Brett had forgiven her, told her he still loved her and would help her break her addiction. Her mind now worked overtime making up excuses, working late, the car breaking down, the RACV not coming when called, etc, but she knew that he would see them all as lies.
She slowly walked to her car, it was only then that the full realization of what she had just done hit her with full force. Parked next to her car was Brett’s Land Rover. He had guessed what had delayed her and was waiting for her.
Last time, love and grace was enough, in a few minutes she would learn whether they would be enough again.
As she put the key in the lock, Brett opened his door.
‘My name is Sandra; I am a gambling addict,’ she said.
