Many Christians want to be involved in witnessing for Christ to bring more people into the kingdom, yet don’t know how to begin. Yes, sending missionaries and pastors out to do the work gives a feeling of accomplishing something by being involved. Yet there is that desire within us to reach the lost in our own little surroundings by our own efforts. Although the Lord can direct you to a specific ministry, here are a few suggestions to help get you started.

1) Start a Bible Study
You don’t have to be an expert in the bible to have a bible study group. In fact, if people see that you are not, Mr. or Mrs. Perfect Christian, they are more apt to accept your invitation. Most people long for some kind of fellowship with anyone who will invite them over. You would be surprised how many non-Christians, who refuse to go to church, will come to a small study group. For example, my pastor and his wife were both saved, and later called into the ministry, because a friend invited them to a bible study.

Pick a study that encourages interaction from the group. Allow unbelievers to express their opinions and gently steer them in the direction of salvation. It is a good idea to have lots of food and fellowship also to help encourage future involvement.

2) Start a Tract Ministry
Handing out a tract is one way of starting a conversation. I enjoyed being involved with a street ministry when I lived in a big city. One night my partner and I gave a tract to a young man and he immediately began to cry. He said he was planning to commit suicide that night unless someone reached out to him. After a convincing conversation about the love of Jesus, he gave his life to the Lord that night.

Street ministry may not be your thing, but you can also leave a tract at a restaurant thanking someone for his or her service. You can send a tract in the mail to family or friends, or just hand a friend a tract concerning a particular problem he or she might be experiencing. Be creative and start reaching out with just a little piece of paper telling of God’s love.

3) Start Wearing Jesus Clothing
Wear clothing with reference to Christ written on them. My husband has all kinds of tee shirts with pictures of the cross, scripture verses, or sayings about Christ on them. He wore a vest one day to Walmart and a little old lady came up to him and said how much she liked his vest. It is another way to start a conversation about the Lord. Just wait for someone to ask a question or make some comment and be ready with an answer.

4) Start With Prayer
Praying for particular people is the best way to get insight from God on how to witness to them. Try praying earnestly for one or two people at a time. It would be a good idea to find a study on how to intercede for others. Pray that their eyes would be open to the truth of God’s word. Also, pray for the spirt of darkness to be lifted from them. Let them know you are praying for their needs and point out when God answers those prayers.

You may think of others ways to witness once you get started. Just get started and the Lord will help you with the rest. Don’t be concerned if people are not saved right away. Just remember, you plant the seed and God gives the increase.
