One Step At A Time
Sitting in the upper room, I looked out and saw the lake shimmering in the sunlight. My mind went back to childhood days when we would sit by the side of a little shimmering stream that ran near our school compound and wrote out our New Year resolutions. We read out loud what we had written and added what we had missed out. So all of us had the same resolutions that most of us forgot by the end of the week! As the years went by and we moved to different schools and different places we forgot all about the habit of writing out our resolutions for the year, but made decisions and stored them mentally. These stayed in the mind for some time and then went into the mental wastebasket.
The greatest resolution that one has to make is to say, “NO” to the devil. All our steps will fall into place when we do this.
I heard a knock at my heart’s door
and asked who it was-
“It’s just an old friend.” came the
answer and I just peeked out.
In came a smiling person in a shining outfit that blew my mind away.
He laughed; he joked and kept me
a prisoner in his grip.
He brought in his own easy-chair
and sat down and stretched his legs;
He filled the place with his presence and
made himself comfortable in my room.

I was a stranger in my own heart.
and tried to get him out of his chair
I tried, but nothing seemed to work
Till I called upon the Holy One.

It was then that I heard a gentle voice
through the key-hole of my heart
I ran before the devil and opened wide
the door of my poor, confused heart.
In came the Holy one and out flew
the evil one, in his easy chair
I thanked the Lord for helping me
and vowed that evil never gets in.
As I grew older I made decisions that I asked the Lord to help me with and not resolutions that seemed to impress others and had to be carried on for a long time without any results. I asked Him to hold my hand and guide me with baby steps to achieve what He wanted me to do. Now when I make a new decision I keep on humming and singing my favorite song. “One step at a time Lord Jesus, that’s all I am asking of you. Lord help me today, show me the way – one step at a time.”
