As much as it drives me insane to see my fellow persons walking or sitting or even, yes, driving, while looking down at their cell phones, iphones, ipads, etc., I have to confess that I love my cell phone! I like the convenience of being able to call anyone, anywhere, assuming there is a strong signal, and that they are able to call me as well. I like being able to check my emails, and even Facebook now and then. After all, these gadgets are literally computers in the palm of our hands.
But what I truly love about my cell phone is how I’m able to take photographs, and really good ones, whenever the mood strikes. I’ve often wondered how neat it would be if I were a professional photographer, where others could appreciate my ability to capture people and those ‘special moments’. Well, I’m not a professional, but I have been able to take some amazing photos with my dear little phone. I have files and files of pictures, including family, friends, outdoors, and trips we have taken.
I have a lovely picture of my ‘grandma’ hand holding a precious, chubby little ‘baby’ hand. That photo is so dear to me. I have pictures of our four year old grandson playing in the snow, and with the switch of a button, I shot a movie of the same event. The sound of his little boy laughter mixed with my own after he throws snow in my face still makes me giggle. When I see their little faces look up at the Christmas tree all lit up, or when they fall asleep snuggled in their favorite blanket on the couch, I am compelled to capture that moment right away, because I know it goes by so quickly.
I love nature too. I was able to take some breathtaking shots of the Arizona sky, while riding on a tour bus of all things. The wisps of white clouds against the deep blue sky were so lovely. While the bus was still moving, I clicked away and the photos proved to be frame-worthy and are hanging on my wall today. Photos were also taken of the Grand Canyon, but just as I was told, pictures don’t do that gigantic ditch justice. I have chosen to treasure the photos with my brother and sister and myself, with the canyon in the background.
When we were in California for my high school reunion, not mentioning how many years, we visited San Francisco and Bodega Bay. My precious phone captured the ocean in the misty morning and the hillside leading down to the beach was covered in, well, weeds. But they were gloriously colorful, and I found myself taking scenic shots that included my husband and our youngest son, as well as photos of each individual flower. While visiting our daughter in Chattanooga, we visited the zoo and I was able to take pictures of peacocks with their feathers spread full with colors of blue, teal, and purple. Click, click, click. Is it any wonder that my bedroom décor includes an ocean theme, or that my bathroom colors are brown and teal, with my beautiful peacock photos displayed proudly?
All of these wonderful memories have been captured with my cell phone. Gone are the days of old rolls of film added to the already overfull bag of undeveloped picture cartridges. I thought we had arrived with digital cameras, but the batteries always ran down way too soon. I used to buy dozens of batteries, just so I would be able to ‘reload’ because I didn’t want to miss anything. Yes, cell phones can run low on power, but if you’re diligent about charging your phone regularly, you’ll be able to take that special picture at a moment’s notice.
This past Sunday afternoon, my husband and I took a nice and peaceful drive, preparing for the work-week ahead. We spent the time just driving, sometimes talking, other times, remaining quiet. It was calming, and was something we don’t get to do very often. The last photo on my phone’s camera roll is of the road before us, lined with fields of grass and corn, and straight ahead is the sun setting just over the horizon. You can even see the dead bugs on our windshield, but I will always remember when and why I took that photograph.
