We met people from Scotland, England, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, France and people from all over our country. An older distinguished man from England had been a body guard for Sir Winston Churchill and had the most interesting stories, about history.
While speaking, I would ask them about the churches in their country and would share copies of Lens Lines. Telling them I was a religious column writer, they would open up with their comments. Most of the people said they did not go to church, but many had gone as a young child with their parents. Many people from Europe mentioned the churches of all denominations were not well attended and they considered religion dead in Europe. The world's countries have many problems today that they are trying to solve on their own instead of looking to the Lord for guidance.
The couple from South Africa attend church weekly and so did their friends. People we talked to from our nation spoke of belonging to a church but often attended only on church holidays, like Easter and Christmas. Recent reports state that some 40 percent of Americans say they attend church, however, from church records less than 20 percent attend regularly.
Recently during my discussions with people from Russia, they tell of their churches being filled with Christians every week. Seems after living under Stalin, who used the large churches to store war materials, the people now realize they needed God in their lives. The churches, a man from Moscow told me, now look like museums as the people worship the Lord.
Our Lord tells us how to solve the needs of our time in Luke 12:30 and 31, " For all these things do the nations of the world seek after; and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather ye seek the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you." That is a powerful message for all nations today, as it was in our Lord's time on the earth. Seems the countries that have turned away from looking to God for answers are causing trials and tribulation for their people.
The faces of Christians from around the world may look different but we all worship the same Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
