The younger children performed first accompanied by tambourines and drums. They sang two Christmas carols, their music for the most part drowning out the words. Their proud parents stood taking photos on their mobiles and ipads for their memory albums. Predictably the smallest children received the biggest applause.
The teenage class had decided to present an upbeat version of the Christmas story. Traditional Christmas carols were jazzed up and rocked along to the sound of an electric guitar.
For the small children’s benefit the 11 and 12 year old class did a classic Santa skit. They borrowed one of the fathers to play the role of Saint Nicholas and acted out the original story of how the Santa legend began. The boys were dressed as reindeers and the girls as Santa’s helpers. They were careful not to glorify Santa, but to bring balance into the legend and point to Jesus.
The choir commenced singing a jazzed up version of He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands. The audience clapped their hands to the rhythm. Then it was time for the 8-10 year olds to do their skit.
Jack stumbled across the stage, he wore an old man’s tweed jacket and felt hat. A cut down walking stick was helping him stay upright. ‘My name is Jack Brown’ he announced in a deep shaky voice. ‘I am very, very old. God holds me in His hands to stop me falling over when I go for my daily walk.’
Sally was next, she was wearing a party dress and a plastic crown on her head. In her arms she carried a baby doll. In a very correct voice she announced; ‘I am Queen Elizabeth and this is my great grand-daughter Princess Charlotte. I know that God directs everything I do as ruler of the United Kingdom’.
David could always be expected to get a laugh whatever he did. He came on stage dressed in a clown suit hired from the local fancy dress store. He cart wheeled across the stage, crashing with a thump at the end of the stage. The audience cheered and clapped. ‘God picks me up every time I fall down in life and puts me back on my feet. Nothing I do is too hard for Him to fix.’
Next to walk across the stage was Anne, she had on a plain cotton dress and apron, with a scarf tied around her long hair. She swept as she walked with a large broom. ‘I am a stay at home mum, I clean the house and cook for my family. Sometimes I get very tired but I know that God cares for me and He gives me strength to look after my family.’ With that she gave a big sigh and walked off the stage. The mothers in the audience knew just how she felt.
Colin walked in confidently, dressed in a suit and tie, carrying a briefcase. He announced: ‘I am the Managing Director of Mc Donalds Restaurants, I get to eat all the Big Macs I want. My job is stressful but God gives me wisdom in the way I run my business.’
Mia and Bill came in holding hands. Mia wore an Indian sari and Billy was dressed in Black with black paint on his face. Together they said, ‘we are from lands across the sea, God has all the people in the world in His hands, He sends missionaries to tell the people about His love for them.’
Lastly in walked their teacher Sandra, dressed as herself. ‘I teach the 8-10 year old class in Kids Church here at Clear Valley. I know that God is holding me and all the children in the class in His hands and that He only wants the best in life for every one of them.’
The Choir started to sing once again as the class joined Sandra on the stage. They joined hands and bowed deeply to the audience. Their parents’ hearts were full of thankfulness to God for giving them such precious children.
This was the last item on the program. Over Supper the parents declared that this last skit definitely stole the show. They agreed that God had their church community and the whole world in His hands.
