We will be using evidence obtained from his electronic diary in this inquest.
Mr Smith wrote on March 13th 2014: 'I have joined the local gym as tired of being unhealthy and the teasing I was getting about my scrawny appearance.'
March 30th: 'For a Sunday, this place is busy! Met a new member of staff, a Mr Piaetra, but we just call him Piaetra. He is running the club health food bar. He makes a mean shake.'
September 29th 2014: 'I cant believe me entering a competition. As I walk away from the gym notice board, I gaze upon a poster announcing the Annual National Body Building competition. I was thinking not for me, that crowd are fanatics. I am content with just having fun at the gym.
While I was asking Piaetra for another one of his lovely protein shakes, he told me he had seen me looking at the poster and tried to encourage me to enter as I had developed in this sport and could go far and win a prize if I trained a little harder.
I don't know how he did it, but he somehow talked me into entering. Although I had said I was not competitive, maybe I am. He said to trust him as we had known each other for six months now and had never steered me wrong.'
October 4th: 'This new schedule is hard work. Piaetra has started giving me a new shake. When I asked him what was in it, he confirmed that it was only ingredients obtained from any health food outlet. I told him I will not do drugs. He looked shocked that I would even suggest such a thing.'
October 27th: 'Over the moon! Been told twice that I look great. A group of girls even asked me to show them how to bench press.'
November 10th: 'Thanked Piaetra for all the help as I have never felt so fit and healthy. He told me it was all my hard work and to just keep on taking these special shakes and keep up with the physical exercises.'
November 19th: Won the gym's own competition.'
December 17th: 'One month till Nationals and I just won the District. The Daily Tribune wrote a great article about me. I really love winning and my body is better than anyones I know. Told Piaetra he should sell his drinks as he would make a fortune.'
January 11th: 'It's the Nationals next week. Have taken time off work as getting hard to concentrate at work. Must be all the pressure of Nationals. Have asked Piaetra to work with me this week, I want to be in tip-top condition.
The next report is a text message to Mr Smiths friend. 'I can't believe going home early, not feeling well. Have asked Piaetra to get me a taxi home. I think I have pulled a muscle in my chest one week before Nationals, of all my luck.'
The next report is a hospital report from the day of Mr Smith's death.
'Earlier this morning Mr Alister Smith was found unconscious in the back of a taxi and rushed to hospital. At 7.28pm he died not regaining consciousness, following a heart attack.'
The Toxicology report has found high levels of unprocessed bitter almonds, which in their unprocessed state are a poison.
This inquest finds accidental death by poisoning.
The Daily Tribune. It is with sadness we announce the death of Mr Alister Smith at 7.28pm on Monday 12th January 2015. Friends and family have given condolences and told of what a great friend and competitor he was. Mr Smith, who is the District Body Building champion and was our best chance of winning the Nationals, died from a heart attack. It is believed that his heart attack may have been brought on by eating unprocessed almonds. Fellow competitors have quoted that he had a thirst for competition and that he was glutton for success at any cost. He will be sadly missed by his fellow competitors. A spokesperson for the Body Builders Council stated that this was an unfortunate incident and was the result of rogue training methods.
Following the Coroners inquest, police are holding a Mr Piaetra, who is helping them with their investigations as it has been discovered Mr Alister Smith had shakes contaminated with unprocessed bitter almonds supplied by Mr Piaetra.
