Recently my wife and I traveled around the country on AMTRAK trains. through 27 states, over eighteen days. On the trip from Portland to Chicago, there was a man who appeared to have lived a difficult life but he had "Jesus Saves" in large letters on the back of his black leather jacket. Whenever I saw him on the train he always was carrying a Bible and speaking to people.
On seeing him in the lounge car with his Bible open taking notes, I commented on the "Jesus Saves" message on his jacket. He said, have a seat and let me tell you my story, after I mentioned that I was a religious column writer. I gave him some of my columns and a pen with a flashlight that says, "The Lord Is My Light And Salvation."
He proceeded to tell me how he thought everything was going his way and he was a self made man in control of his future. He had a nice loving wife and two children, a fine job, a large home, and new car. Then bad habits took over his life and he lost everything and he said again, yes, I lost everything. Soon he found himself with homeless people living in a wooded area near a small creek, He spoke how his life style continued to go down the slippery slide as he added drugs and ate very little food. At times he wished his life was over and one day, in a drunken condition, he went for a walk in the woods.
As he hiked through the woods, he lost his balance and fell down hitting a tree stump. This resulted in breaking his nose and damaging his right eye, blooded covered his face and he could not see to walk back to camp. As he laid helpless on the ground, he recalled going to Sunday School as a young boy and cried out to the Lord. He prayed to our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ , please help me and I will spend the rest of my life serving you Lord. He laid there praying for some time when a young couple strolling through the woods found him in his helpless condition. They called an ambulance and he was rushed to a hospital as the Lord had answered his prayers.
The Lord answered his cry for help when he was 45 years old and today at 62 he travels around the country stopping at homeless shelters and churches. He finds places that feed and shelter the homeless have preachers giving min-sermons but the homeless never seem to complain when he tells them his story how the Lord changed his life and saved him . I mentioned my favorite Bible verse. Mathew 21-22, and this saved man said from memory, " And all things, whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." It was a real blessing speaking to this man and hearing his testimony, as we can serve the Lord spreading the Gospel in so many ways.
