Gary pulled the covers over his head and nudged Colleen. "Would you feed these guys?"
"I can, but it's time to get up for church anyway."
"It's been a long week. I'm catching up on sleep. You go ahead. I'll download the sermon later."
"What did you think of last week's message?"
"Um, I haven't gotten to it yet."
"Well, I'm tired of making excuses for you. I'll feed the furballs and get some more sleep myself, since I always have the swing shift at the hospital on Saturday night, which never seems to interfere with me getting up for church."

As Colleen sipped her second cup of coffee, scrolling through headlines on her laptop, Gary descended the stairs, golf bag in hand. "You've got to be kidding me! With our work schedules, we've hardly seen each other in weeks, can't even make church together, have a ton of yard work to do, and you're going golfing?"
"With all the stress at work, I need to do something relaxing. The yard isn't going anywhere."
"Then at least bring home dinner. I'm not cooking after raking, fixing the fence, etc."
"Pizza or Chinese?"
"Whatever."

Colleen waved at her neighbor Sam, with a longing look at the leaf blower he was using. He shut it off and walked over. Eying the rake in Colleen's hand he offered, "I'm almost done. You may use the blower if you like."
"Thanks! That will really save my back."
"Would you like some coffee and a brownie," Colleen invited, after the leaves were bagged and the fence mended.
"That sounds great!"
They didn't notice the concerned looks the cats exchanged as Colleen served Sam a steaming mug of coffee and a three inch brownie, joining him at the table with a set of her own. Without really intending to, she poured out the frustrations of the last few weeks. Sam listened sympathetically. "I don't know Gary very well, but he must be crazy to go golfing when he could spend the day with you."
"Um, thanks... Quill, get off the table!"
Fleeing Colleen's shooing hand, his foot caught the handle of Sam's mug, cascading the remaining coffee in his lap.
Colleen jumped up, grabbed a towel, and handed it to Sam. "I'm so sorry! I don't know what came over him. He never gets on the table."
"Curiosity, I suppose," Sam grinned. "Thanks for the refreshments. Guess I'd better get changed. Let me know if you need assistance with any other projects." Was that a wink she saw?

After their fill of pizza, Gary headed for his man cave, Quill sauntering after him. Colleen settled in on the love seat in front of the fireplace with a romance novel. A few pages in, a thud startled her. Looking up, she saw Prill blithely bathing herself on the mantle, the family Bible lying open on the hearth. When Colleen reached to return it to the mantle, she saw that it had opened to where they had tucked their marriage certificate in Eph. 5. With a disquieted heart, she set the novel aside and prayed for their marriage.
Quill stretched languorously after his catnap next to Gary, bumping a couple of keys on his laptop. The video he had just started closed, replaced by Colleen's photo on the desktop. "If I didn't know better..." He shook his head, closed the laptop, and headed for bed.
After dinner the following evening, Colleen ventured, "I picked up a movie today..."
"Enjoy. I'm gonna watch the game." It had just started when Quill jumped up next to him, landing on the remote. The screen went blank. No sooner had Gary gotten the game back on, when Quill decided to rub his whiskers on the remote, causing a pastor to appear instead. Gary turned it off and went to find Colleen, who had just curled up with a bowl of popcorn.
"Mind if I join you? Quill doesn't seem to want to watch football tonight."
Colleen nodded and smiled, and the cats purred contentedly as the opening scene of "Fireproof" filled the screen.

KJV 1 Timothy 3:16
"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."
