When they first met, they didn’t want anything to do with the other. Bruno would watch Fluffy, and couldn’t believe that whenever a stranger would come inside she would run and hide. What’s wrong with her?
Fluffy watched Bruno from underneath the chair, and thought that the drooling he did as he greeted the visitor and begged for treats was nauseating. What’s wrong with him?
Fluffy was- how do I say this kindly- temperamental. She liked to be petted when she felt like be petted and left alone when she felt like being alone. Her claws were sharp and when the mood struck her, she would remind you that she knew how to use them. Bruno was appalled that she would treat others so inhumanely.
Bruno liked being petted all the time. He liked to play ball all the time. And he could eat almost all of the time too. Fluffy didn’t understand him at all. As she sat observing his odd behavior, Bruno came over to play with her, and Fluffy reminded him that she knew how to use her claws- and that she was not in the mood to play.
It seemed they would never get along. They were too different, after all. But one day something happened that made Fluffy realize that maybe Bruno wasn’t so bad. Bruno and Fluffy were both outside getting some fresh air on this particular morning, and as Fluffy was basking in the sun watching birds fly overhead, somehow she didn’t hear the sound of approaching footsteps. Bruno, too, was distracted. Not by the birds, but by the meaty new bone he’d just gotten that morning. The pedestrian didn’t notice the dog or the cat. She was simply walking through the neighborhood taking surveys at each residence. But as the tread of her shoes sounded on the gravel, Bruno suddenly was alerted to this approaching stranger, and so he did what he thought was best in a situation like this; he barked and barked and barked. The young lady walked off rather frightened. Fluffy was only alerted to the approaching woman due to Bruno’s barking, and she hardly had time to duck for cover before the woman was already gone. Fluffy was amazed. Wow, she thought, Bruno is good for something. I sure don’t like strangers, and he seemed to scare that one away.
It wasn’t much longer before they went inside for breakfast. And when they were done eating Bruno headed to his bed for a short snooze. Fluffy decided it was time for a bath, so she proceeded to clean herself thoroughly. But as she quietly cleaned herself, a mouse darted through the room. Fluffy’s eyes were fixed at the bottom of the bookshelf that she had just seen the mouse run behind. She noiselessly approached the bookshelf and poised herself for the confrontation. And in rapid succession, the mouse peeked his head out, and Fluffy pounced that small creature. Bruno was now awake, and he watched silently from his bed. This tremendously large white dog had a small, dark secret- he was scared of mice! He watched Fluffy as she let the mouse run, then batted it, then let it loose again, then pounced it once more, which resulted in the life of that little creature being taken. Bruno was relieved that the mouse was dead, and he looked at Fluffy differently now too. Evidently she is very useful, Bruno thought to himself.
Though created very differently, Bruno and Fluffy learned that fateful morning that being different has its benefits. Husbands and wives are in many ways as different as are dogs and cats, but as Fluffy and Bruno learned to appreciate the differences in one another, we must learn to look at differences in a positive light. The differences we have are to be treasured, admired, and daily expressed to the other. The strengths of the husband are often the weaknesses of the wife, and the strengths of the wife are often the weaknesses of the husband. If we were the same, so much would be missing!
