What would have happened if they had cell phones, computers, Ipads, etc. back in Biblical times? Think it about. Would Goliath have been slain and the Philistines defeated, if David had a 3DS? I mean, really think about it.

“What’s that Father? You want me to go check on my brothers and see how the war is going? Okay. Just a sec. Let me finish my game first. What game am I playing? Oh, I’m trying to kill these giants who want to take over the world. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll leave as soon as they kill me off. Actually, I’m pretty good at killing giants so it will probably take a while. It’s not like the army’s going anywhere anytime soon. From what I hear they’ve been in a deadlock with the Philistines for quite some time now. Calm down, Father; I said I’d go. Chill!”

Put down the 3DS, David, and pick up your harp. Those moments spent in praise and worship while tending the sheep drew you closer to your God. Learning to trust Him came from those intimate times spent with Him and from life experiences. No digital device could ever do that for you.

What would have happened if Noah had a cell phone? Think about it. Would the ark have ever been built?

“Can you hear me now, God? The reception isn’t very good down here. Maybe it will work better if I climb this hill. Can you hear me now? No? How about now? I’m going to put the cell phone in my robe for a minute while I climb this tree. Can you hear me now? Okay, about those instructions for the ark. Could you possibly fax them over to me? It would go a lot quicker that way. Writing things downs is so totally old world, you know. Okay, I’m at the fax machine. Yep. It’s printing. Oh bother, ran out of ink. I’ll get back to you later, Big Guy.”

Hang up the cell phone, Noah. You have a direct line of communication with the Big Guy upstairs. He knows your name and your faithfulness to Him during these tough and evil times. Don’t settle for an imitation of the real thing. Share one on one with the Lord God Almighty because no digital device can ever speak to you like God can.

What would have happened if Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a Facebook page? Couldn’t you just imagine the shame she would have felt? It might have been more than she could bear. Think about it.

“Oh Mother, it’s so awful. The things they are saying about me on Facebook. Mother! How could you say such a terrible thing? I get what I deserve? I deserve what they’re saying? But Mother, this thing has spread like wildfire. It’s all over the internet. I’ve been disgraced. Just this morning 629 people unfriended me. Please believe me, Mother. Joseph and I were never together like THAT. I know I’m pregnant and, yes, I know how a woman gets pregnant but this is different. Oh great, someone took a video of me waddling around the backyard and it’s being played on YouTube. It already has 2 million hits.”

Log out of Facebook, Mary. Those people don’t really know you like your Lord does. He sees your purity, they don’t. He sees how your heart is turned toward Him, they don’t. He calls you His favored one. He doesn’t lie, He means what He says. He will never condemn you. He admires you for your willingness to suffer shame to bring to earth His Son. Your true friends won’t unfriend you and neither will God.

What would have happened if the heroes of our faith tweeted it, texted it, faxed it, emailed it, twittered it, or Facebooked the hope of the Messiah in the Old Testament and then the redemption offered through Christ in the New Testament? Think about it. Would it have been effective? Probably. Let’s face it, the digital world is a force to be reckoned with and does have a powerful influence in our lives.

At the same time, I do believe those honorable heroes of our faith would have known the value of unplugging occasionally to connect intimately with the King of kings and Lord of lords. They would have understood that the hunger and thirst they were experiencing could only be satisfied through real and genuine fellowship with Christ and others.

Think about it.
