Soft strains of beautiful music filled the air as we gathered ‘round the twinkling tree on Christmas morning of 2010. Our son-in-law settled into his leather recliner, Our daughter and granddaughter snuggled into the oversized chair with their feet propped comfortably on the oversized ottomon, Grandpa and I were on the couch. It’s present time!
One by one the gaily-wrapped packages found their owners and the wrappings came off to reveal carefully chosen gifts. All eyes were on our son-in-law as he patiently unwrapped a small box. Ohhhhhhs and ahhhhhhs filled the air when he pulled the latest version of an i-Pod from its resting place. Our knowledgeable teenage granddaughter said, “How much memory do you have, Dad?”
David quickly scanned the box and answered, “32 gigabytes.”
“Wow! Dad. You’ll never fill that up.”
Fast forward a couple weeks and we find Grandpa and I visiting with one of our seven really computer-savvy grandsons-in-law. Ever since Christmas I had been thinking of getting my husband an iPod. He was always interested in the latest gadgets and though he did not work a lot with computers it seemed an iPod might make the perfect gift for his 80th birthday that was just around the corner.
“Jesse, pick out an iPod for Grandpa and order it for us. I think an 8 gigabyte will be about right.” A few days later the precious little box was delivered to our door. Those first days were busy ones as Grandpa learned to move around easily with his 21st century tool. He quickly found music, adventure, history, sermons, recipes and many other sites for entertainment and knowledge. It was great fun watching my octogenarian husband as he traveled around the world with his iPod.
One day, while Grandpa was enjoying his daily browse through the internet, my mind flooded with these thoughts:
Grandma lost her place to an iPod.
Grandpa keeps it close to his heart.
He starts out every day, in the iPod way.
He and little iPod never part.
First comes a reading from the Bible,
Then he marches with the Roman troops
He whistles along, with an iPod song,
He and little iPod never part.
Next comes a check on the weather,
Minnesota, Texas, Tennessee.
And, of course, Illinois, weather is a joy.
He and little iPod never part.
Now comes a class in psychiatry
And a trek upon the mountain top.
Check the recipes, tasty food to see.
He and little iPod never part.
Grandpa still is investigating,
But little iPod needs a restful break.
Charging is a snap, while Grandpa takes a nap,
He and little iPod never part.
Ohhhh, Grandma lost her place to an iPod,
Grandpa keeps it close to his heart.
He ends every day, in the iPod way,
He and little iPod never part.
In no time at all Grandpa had his 8 gigabyte iPod plumb full. A few months rushed by and our daughter came to visit. “How are you doing with your iPod, Dad?”
“Oh, I’m doing fine except I have it full.”
“Already?”
“Yep!”
“Well, we’ll have to do something about that.” She sat down at the computer and promptly ordered another iPod for her 21st century dad. This time it was a 32 gigabyte affair. Maybe, just maybe, that will hold her groovy, googling dad for a while.
