My then fiancé had two horses, Becki and Sundi, mother and daughter. She had grown up riding and loved horses. I grew up in the city, and had never been on the back of a horse. It occurred to me, however, that when she invited me to ride with her, it would probably be much more beneficial to our growing relationship if I said yes. So I did. Say yes.
It was not to be a long ride, just from the shed where the horses were sheltered back to a small creek on the back of my fiancé's parents' property. She showed me how to get on Sundi, and she got on Becki and off we went on a slow ride through what my girl's family called "the back forty", though it was nowhere near that size.
Sundi followed Becki and I was just about to get comfortable when Sundi walked very close to a large tree, nearly scraping my leg against it. Did she do that on purpose? I thought she did.
After what seemed like an hour or so, but was only a few minutes, we arrived at the very small stream that trickled at the edge of Dad's property. We got off the horses and walked hand-in-hand along the stream.
"Shouldn't we tie up the horses?" I asked. I mean, that's what they always did in the movies. "No," my future wife said, "they'll be OK."
We found a good-sized log resting along side the trickle of water that flowed in the stream and sat down. We began to talk about, well, our future together, you know, the things engaged couples talk about when the only company they have is two horses blissfully nibbling on leaves.
Suddenly the horses took off, running toward the front of the property where their shed was located. In a flash, they were gone.
"You come back here, Becki" my bride yelled, to no avail. "I guess we get to walk back," she said to me, and we started off. It was not a long walk, and it certainly was not an unpleasant walk given the company I had. And I have to admit I preferred walking to riding at that point in time.
When we got back to the front of the property, Becki and Sundi stood under a tree, reins trailing. As we approached my girl said, "I think they did that deliberately!"
Just then two horses raised their heads and whinnied triumphantly, like they were laughing. They did do it deliberately. We got it straight from the horses' mouths.
