WELL DONE! WELL DONE CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS!
In the year 1995, after we settled here graciously in the USA, whenever we met people for the first time, my husband Bill and I, were asked this same direct question: “Would you like to tell us why you chose to come to America? Why have you not chosen Australia, Canada, or Europe?”
“Well” I would grin and reply deliberately, and with no less humor, than their inquisitive approach: “We wished to discover the rest of that entire land which dear Christopher Columbus has missed.”
Whenever I recall those humorous answers to satisfy people’s deep curiosity,
I smile to myself. Indeed, in those early years of our life in the USA, I had so much more to learn about honoring and exalting those whom our great Lord has helped to bring America into being and grand prominence.
What an honor to hear the multitudes chanting everywhere
“America …America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea!”
.
As a result of celebrating Columbus Day , I learned that it is one special day marked and observed with great outstanding appreciation here in the States. This did not cross my mind until one afternoon, during the first year of our residency in Missouri. That late afternoon, when I discovered that the mailbox flags were still up, I have assumed that our mailman has missed his rounds. I asked my neighbor Norma.
“Are the mailmen on strike today?”
Then only, have I learnt the significance of that specific day, because of this exceedingly privileged character in the history of the whole world, Christopher Columbus. In our schools, back in Africa, we have attentively studied much about him; that he was as an experienced and renowned navigator. His knowledge of the deep and his familiarity and his researches of different lands went back as far as the year 1465 when Columbus was actually just at a very young age.
What deeply rejoiced my heart most, was the fruitful victories stemming from his explorations of great expeditions and voyages. One of those triumphs was, winning for the Spaniards what is known as the Watling’s Island in the Bahamas, the West Indies.
I often wonder to myself-“Is that why Columbus named these widespread Arawak people Indians?”
Columbus, did have profound courage and great stamina despite the numerous mishaps he had experienced. Even when he believed San Salvador to be an island of the Indies, he still colonized it.
We read of how he dauntlessly took possession of that Island. He then put up the Spanish flag --with such tranquility and self-assurance while all those friendly and welcoming natives stood peacefully watching him with admiration….
This shows that our true God was with Columbus---from beginning to end…Hallelujah!
According to historical records, we are told that he had established the best amiable relations with the native Indians. They trusted him implicitly. He formed a strong bond with them plus a long period of uninterrupted trade which continued with him as a greatly accountable person in charge.
.
There is so much more about this famous Genoese seaman, once I became an American citizen, I started to appreciate and value him more and praise God for him and for who he was, and all what he accomplished.
The daring career of Columbus and his abundant successful achievements, still speak for him today. I find that I have no more reason to jest about coming to America to discover that which Christopher Columbus had missed. In truth he has excelled with honor in every conquest our good and bountiful God has granted him through His great love and protection. He simultaneously explored and uncovered to the world triumphs both in History and in Geography.
So Christopher Columbus had proved before the world, that
only God was fully able to grant him the total victories which he won.
