We’re on the fast
track now and what once intimated interminable
can only be glimpsed in flashes.
A summer lost and vague, waving in her royal fashion, aloof.
All vanished, save those moments of true impact and we’re careening out of
their childhood, scribbling history, after what
we felt would last forever.
We pull out pictures as though conducting research.
We
want to
extract
these memories,
to bring them back to life, their little faces.
What was he thinking in this one? Remember this? We didn’t know yet who she’d become.
Do they help?
We
find that what we truly wish for is the less momentous past, than what these
pictures
point to.
We want the rocking in the thick
of night, the feel of cradled baby and the smell of his
soft head, the shared glance with our love – that secret smile
during the littlest one’s school play, knowing how many hours really went into the making of that
gardenia costume, yes, even the constant noise that disrupted any hope for peace in our modest nest.
So much time spent on so much.
And yet it veers in only minutes.
Two hours spent cooking dinner for
this oldest boy of ours,
making it home for a rare visit.
His favorite meal, prepared and table set.
And after we speak of grades and jobs, he announces in a mere moment
his engagement…and with that, all will change.
Our next once child;
her graduation, four college years gone, and three hours of ceremony down, we see in that moment of a
handshake between her and dean, all is altered.
Two we still have home, but for only minutes.
Minutes.
Minutes
before they too will fly.
Leave our shelter, take husbands, have children of their own.
We thought in
terms of years.
We now know there are only minutes.
